Ilämuku Cape Presented to
Honolulu Police Department

HONOLULU, HAWAIÿI – On Tuesday, March 25, 2008, the Royal Order of Kamehameha I presented an Ilämuku Cape to the Honolulu Police Department for inclusion in the HPD Law Enforcement Museum.

According to the HPD website (www.honolulupd.org), “The Honolulu Police Department’s Law Enforcement Museum depicts the evolution and history of law enforcement in Hawaiÿi. From the first police officer (the ilämuku), to the men and women that serve our island today.”

The position of the ilämuku is further described in The Honolulu Police Department: A Brief History, by Leon Straus: “Early Hawaii had no regular police force. As has already been indicated, the king was the law, but a somewhat primitive enforcement body was in the service of the king, and of those identified as senior chiefs. The men in this so-called force were warriors known as the 'ilämuku'. They enforced compliance with the law, such as it was, carrying out the orders of their leaders as it concerned punishment meted out to law-breakers.”
