PREAMBLE

Roy and Aleata Moore were lifelong residents of Brown County, Kansas, and moved to Hiawatha, Kansas, in 1975 retiring from a career of farming in the Robinson community. Mrs. Moore was the last to die in 1995, and in her Last Will and Testament she established this testamentary trust for the award of scholarships for graduating students from Hiawatha High School. The scholarship program began with the graduates of 1997 and was in existence for a period of 20 years.

In 2016, the funds were transferred to the USD #415 Educational Foundation with the purpose of continuing the tradition of assisting Hiawatha High School graduates pursue postsecondary educational opportunities.


ADMINISTRATION OF THE MOORE

SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Scholarship awards will be awarded to graduating seniors of Hiawatha High School who enroll in a university, college, community college, graduate school, vocational or proprietary school.

The selection of recipients for the scholarships will be based upon their successful completion of their high school education as well as pursuing a qualified postsecondary educational opportunity, as described above.

Selection of the recipient will be made without regard to race, color, religion, sex, age or national origin.

SELECTION COMMITTEE AND CRITERIA

The selection committee for the Moore Scholarship Fund recipient shall consist of members of the Scholarship committee of the USD #415 Educational Foundation.

The criteria for selection are as follows:

a. Recipient must be a graduate of Hiawatha High School.

b. Recipient must demonstrate potential success in post high school education or training.

c. In order to receive the scholarship the recipient must be enrolled

full-time student (minimum of 12 hours) at a college or university.

d. If a recipient is attending a vocational or trade school and/or proprietary school, the recipient must be classified as a full-time student in his or her program of choice. Absent evidence to the contrary a “full time student” in a vocational, trade, and/or proprietary school is a student enrolled in a school which has a 180 day school year (1,116 hours per school year) or an average of 6 hours per day of instruction for a school year less than 180 days.

e. All applicants must submit a completed application form. The form of the application must be approved by the scholarship committee.

COMMENTS ON CRITERIA

The recipient must be considered as having the potential to be successful at the university, college, vocational and/or proprietary school level.

The selection committee will decide annually the number of recipients of the Moore Scholarship Fund and the amount of the scholarships.

Education institutions would include colleges, universities, two year colleges, community colleges, graduate schools, vocational school, trade schools and proprietary schools as approved by the selection committee and trustee.

All applicants must have graduated or will graduate from Hiawatha High School.

RENEWAL

This is a one year scholarship and will not qualify for renewals.

PAYMENT PROCEDURES

The scholarship award of payment will be made directly to the educational institution for credit towards the scholarship recipient’s tuition and expenses. In the case of recipients attending university, college, or community college educational institutions the award will be divided equally between the first and second semester with payments being made when the educational institution normally requires payment.

All applicants must submit a completed application and required documentation as follows:

A. A signed and completed application form to be submitted to the School Board Office, located at 706 South 1st Street, Hiawatha, KS 66434 on or before April 1, 2017 at 5:00 p.m.

B. In the case of applicant’s request for a scholarship to attend a proprietary school, a completed and signed proprietary application must accompany the application.
