Estimated Time needed: 1 class period 30 min long.

Background information: Students will understand the concept of place value up to the 10,000 place. They will also understand the concept of using a rounding mountain to round a number to the 10’s place.

Instructional Procedures: Review the process of rounding a number to the nearest place value using a rounding mountain.

Begin the power point.

Begin reading the story of Cinderella when you get to the slide titled Once Upon a Time. Stop at the point where her fairy godmother is going to start transforming items so that she can go to the ball.

Write the number 24,639 on the board.

Advance to the next slide.

Say: We are going to use Cinderella to help us round a number to the nearest 10’s place. Cinderella is the number in the 10’s place. (Advance to the point where Cinderella in behind the number three.) Her fairy godmother is the number on her right. (Advance to the picture where the fairy godmother is behind the number 9.) And the prince and his family are the numbers on the left. (Advance to the pictures of the prince’s family behind their corresponding numbers.)Now if Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother is the number 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9, then she is very strong, and when the Fairy Godmother changes Cinderella into her ball gown, her number goes up by one, and becomes a 4. (Advance to the picture where Cinderella and her number change.) When Cinderella goes to the ball, the prince will fall in love with her instantly, and she gets to remain a princess forever. Her fairy godmother disappears, because her job is done. (Advance to the picture where the fairy godmother disappears, and a 0 takes her place.) The prince and his family are already a member of the royal family, so their numbers always remains the same.

Now write the number 24,632 on the board.

Say: We are going to use Cinderella to help us round a number to the nearest 10’s place. Cinderella is the number in the 10’s place. (Advance to the point where Cinderella in behind the number three.) Her fairy godmother is the number on her right. (Advance to the picture where the fairy godmother is behind the number 2.) And the prince and his family are the numbers on the left. (Advance to the pictures of the prince’s family behind their corresponding numbers.) Now if Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother is the number 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4, then she is not very strong, and when the Fairy Godmother changes Cinderella into her ball gown, her number stays the same. (Advance to the picture where Cinderella and her number change.) When Cinderella goes to the ball, at the strike of midnight the magic will be broken, and she must return to her normal self. (Advance to the picture where Cinderella returns to her normal self.) Her fairy godmother disappears, because her job is done. (Advance to the picture where the fairy godmother disappears, and a 0 takes her place.) The prince and his family are already a member of the royal family, so their numbers always remains the same.

Review the concept with several more numbers written on the board, moving to the 100’s and 1000’s place.

When you are sure that the students understand, show the final slide.

Assessment: Students will complete a work sheet with 12 problems on it, 4 each of rounding to 10’s, 100’s, and 1000’s place.
