Bad knees caused him to move into managing in the Yankees farm system in 1971 and he was first base coach for the Yankees during their World Series season in 1977. He became manager of the Atlanta Braves in 1978, but had a losing record over four years. He then became manager of the Toronto Blue Jays, but was lured back to the Braves as their general manager in 1985. As a Grand Ole Opry performer, she took the role of comedic foil opposite Faron Young and Webb Pierce.
