Article l - Name, Purpose, and Non-Discrimination Policy of the Organization.

Section 1: Name: Peer Elective Education Resource

Section 2 - Purpose: Peer Educator Elective Resource (PEER) is a group of second year medical students who are dedicated to helping first year medical students achieve success in your first year at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. We provide review slides and practice questions which M1s can use to prepare for their final exams, and also a practice anatomy practical.

Section 3 - Non-Discrimination Policy: PEER does not discriminate on the basis of age, ancestry, color, disability, gender identity or expression, genetic information, HIV/AIDS status, military status, national origin, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, protected veteran status, or any other bases under the law, in its activities, programs, admission, and employment.

Article II - Membership: Qualifications and categories of membership.

Voting membership is limited to currently enrolled Ohio State University College of Medicine students. Others such as faculty, alumni, professionals, etc. are encouraged to become members but as non-voting associate or honorary members.

Article III – Methods for Removing Members and Executive Officers

Leaders may be removed following a unanimous vote of the remainder of the PEER leadership board if he or she fails to perform duties as specified and fails to live up to his/her constitutional obligations. Members may be removed if they fail to participate in any activities throughout one calendar year, if he or she steals from the organization, tarnishes the name/reputation of the organization, or acts in a manner not in accordance with the organization's mission. The offending member will be removed following a two-thirds vote of the PEER leadership board.

Article IV - Organization Leadership: Titles, terms of office, type of selection, and duties of the leaders.

Leader: PEER leaders are appointed by the previous year’s PEER leaders. There will be 4-5 leaders, having the title “Leader,” whom will hold office for one year until the next spring when they will appoint new leaders from the first year class. PEER Leaders are responsible for creating the spreadsheet delineating which curriculum topics need to be reviewed, organizing the meetings to go over the review materials created by PEER members, managing funds to provide food for the meetings, sending the review materials to the class, and setting up the practice anatomy practical.

Treasurer: Length of term one year, position appointed by previous PEER leaders, duties include maintaining all records of the organization’s activities and functions, overseeing dispersal and acquisition of interest group funds, and keeping clear and accurate records of yearly expenses and income.

Article V – Adviser(s) or Advisory Board: Qualification Criteria.

Advisers of student organizations must be full-time members of the University faculty or Administrative & Professional staff. If a person is serving as an adviser who is not a member of the above classifications, a co-adviser must be chosen who is a member of these University classifications. The role of the adviser is to provide guidance and suggestions to the organizational leadership, as well as to facilitate communication between department faculty and students.

Article VI – Meetings of the Organization: Required meetings and their frequency.

Five general meetings to go over review materials are required for the school year – one for each academic block in the first year of the medical curriculum.

Article VII – Method of Amending Constitution: Proposals, notice, and voting requirements.

Proposed amendments should be in writing, should not be acted upon but read in the general meeting in which they are proposed, should be read again at a specified number of subsequent general meetings and the general meeting in which the votes will be taken, and should either require a two-third or three-quarter majority of voting members (a quorum being present) or a majority or two-thirds of the entire voting membership of the organization, present or not. The constitution should not be amended easily or frequently.

Article I - Membership

First year students enrolled in the College of Medicine may apply for membership by completing a PEER membership application made available in spring. Current PEER leaders review applications and pick approximately 10 members and 4 leaders. The prerequisite for application is a cumulative grade in medical knowledge of at least 85%.
