President's Message: Thanks Rick! Your service to Rotary as president for the past year has been exemplary. We all appreciate the time and dedication. As we all know, Rick has the "biggest Rolodex" in the club and has graciously accepted the role as Program Chair. It is guaranteed we will have one of the most entertaining if not informative clubs in the area. Our Rotarian of Year, Jim Pratzner, has accepted the role of Service Chair. Talented as an organizer, Jim will steer us in the right direction to get our many projects completed. Jeff Nichols enthusiasm for Rotary and ability to get potential members excited in joining the club is taking on the role of Membership Chair. Foundation Chair is headed by Peggy Munley who is experienced on the Club and District level. She has the abilities and dedication to navigate us through the new "Future Vision" grants process. Along with the experienced Board, Margo Johnson and the "can-do" membership, this next year should be very rewarding. As we start the new fiscal year I want to congratulate all members of Brandywine Hundred Rotary Club for making our community a better place. Thank you for your service!

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Planning Session: All Board members, committee chairs, interested club members. President Ron would like to have a planning session on Tuesday evening, July 13th. It will be a dinner meeting/planning session at Margo Johnson’s house for a barbeque. (Ron is cooking!) More details to follow, but put it on your calendar.

Committees: Ron still needs committee chairs for the new year. We need someone else to take on the job of our weekly bulletin. We also need a committee to start planning the club’s 20th anniversary celebration in May.

ATTENDANCE RECOGNITIONS: Rotary not only encourages, but “requires” good attendance: 50% at your own club’s and make-up within the 2 weeks of the missed meeting. We all agree good attendance makes a good Rotarian. We have a lot of good Rotarians this year. (Attendance includes make-ups at ANY Rotary function, i.e. District meetings, Board meetings, service projects, another club, etc.)

100% Attendance: Chris Blackwell, Bill Day, Rick Jensen, Margo Johnson and Ron Meick.

75% Attendance (or better): Bob Berman, Len Bronstein, Charlie Depfer, Dorothy Fischer, Todd Harra, Steve Lewis, Jim McBride, Peggy Munley, Jeff Nichols, Ron Nordheimer and Jim Pratzner.

In addition, our club placed in the top FIVE for attendance in the district (out of 40 clubs) 5 months last year.

July Birthdays: Happy Birthday to Bob Valihura (7/3) and Charlie Depfer (7/19).

POTPOURRI: JULY 4TH TRIVIA

  • The major objection to being ruled by Britain was taxation without representation. The colonists had no say in the decisions of English Parliament.
  • In May, 1776, after nearly a year of trying to resolve their differences with England, the colonies sent delegates to the Second Continental Congress. Finally, in June, admitting that their efforts were hopeless; a committee was formed to compose the formal Declaration of Independence. Headed by Thomas Jefferson, the committee also included John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Philip Livingston and Roger Sherman. On June 28, 1776, Thomas Jefferson presented the first draft of the declaration to Congress.
  • Betsy Ross, according to legend, sewed the first American flag in May or June 1776, as commissioned by the Congressional Committee.
  • Independence Day was first celebrated in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776.
  • Both Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died on Independence Day, July 4, 1826.
  • The 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence did not sign at the same time, nor did they sign on July 4, 1776. The official event occurred on August 2, 1776, when 50 men signed it.
  • The names of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were withheld from the public for more than six months to protect the signers. If independence had not been achieved, the treasonable act of the signers would have, by law, resulted in their deaths.
  • Thomas McKean was the last to sign in January, 1777.
