Rosie Roamer in Year 2

As you can see Rosie has had a new hairstyle ready for this year 2 control lesson. Class I3H have been extremely enthusiastic and I could tell from how quickly they picked up on the concept of control that they were going to be a responsive class to work with.

Lesson 1

They quickly learnt how important clear instructions were when we did the blindfold activity. They actively listened and were keen to program Rosie themselves. Mrs Smallwood the classroom T.A found the first Licences easy to work through.

Lesson 2

I introduced the number mats and the children learnt how to carefully position Rosie so that she wouldn’t fall off the mats.

Miss Harper, the class teacher helped to pick out children for the different activities. Some children managed to work out both addition and subtraction number sentences and were ready to gain their count on count back licence.

Lesson 3

I used a larger mat and the children realised that Rosie needs to turn if she is going to reach all areas of the mat.

I teach the children a 90° turn from the start. I have always found that they learn this easily and it prepares the way for 90° angles.

Lesson 4 (Time for Assessment)

I3H have learnt a tremendous amount about using a floor turtle but Miss Harper and I noticed that there was a large range in ability. We decided it was time to do an assessment. I made the children “Where will Rosie go?” booklets. These would give us some idea of which children needed extra practice to consolidate the areas we had covered so far.

I put the results into Excel so that we could clearly see which children were ready to move on and which needed more time on this level. I was really pleased with the results. A lot of the children could both work out and record the instructions. Now Mrs Smallwood could use the results to focus the group work to the children’s needs.

Rosie in demand!

In previous years Roamer has been mainly used for the year 2 unit. ICT and Control is now infiltrating into year 1 and the foundation stages. This will change the way that year 2 control work is run in future years. It also means that Rosie is in demand and will be now needed by year 1, while year 2 has a slightly less friendly visitor.

I do not feel that the year 2 children are ready to move on to the Captain Blackbeard lesson on our large map. Therefore I am introducing a new smaller map (the Valiant Treasure Island one).

I am looking forward to seeing how well year 1 get on with Rosie and discovering some of the other activities that they can progress on to.

I hope that some of the resources that I have made will be of use to you, although a lot of them are made for Rosie work, you could very easily change them to fit in with your characters. The slide shows are easy to adapt and I do find that I change them quite often. It is only when you run them with a class that you discover areas that need more attention.
