This module amendment is being submitted in tandem with a programme amendment form for the Graduate Diploma in Economics. The rationale for the module amendment is reproduced here:
“We would then propose that the current final term module, currently Mathematical Economics be renamed Topics in Mathematical Economics and Econometrics (a module amendment form is being submitted). There will be some change of content (as the new title suggests), reflecting our experience that students proceeding to MSc programmes need to upgrade their technical skills in econometrics as well as economics. The module would continue to be taught in the summer term.
This reform would allow the amended module to be used in two ways:
1. For students who proceed to our own MSc, this module would, at the discretion of the MSc Programme Director, be allowed as a (zero-weighted) credit to the MSc Economics, in place of the existing preparatory module in Mathematics & Statistics, held in September. For such students the MSc programme would thus effectively start in the summer term. We hope that this would encourage GDE students to stay on at Birkbeck.
2. For students who proceed to MScs in other universities that require advanced technical training (eg, we regularly send students to Cambridge, LSE and UCL) we propose to introduce a new award: the Graduate Diploma in Quantitative Economics (GDQE). The new Diploma would be awarded on the basis of the following modules, totalling 120 credits, taken over one or two years.
·  Applied Statistics & Econometrics
·  Microeconomics
·  Macroeconomics
·  Topics in Mathematical Economics & Econometrics”

14 / Syllabus
Please itemise main topics of study and details of changes to be made
The existing module focuses only on mathematical economics. As its title suggests the new module will introduce additional material on econometrics, which will build on material presented in the earlier module Applied Statistics & Econometrics, focussing on material that will help to introduce students to some material covered in an MSc. The precise coverage, and the balance between the two components, may change from year to year.

CLOSING DATE FOR MODULE AMENDMENTS: by the end of the 2nd week of the term preceding the starting date i.e. when teaching would begin. Thus, for a new module planned to be introduced in the Summer term 2011, notification should be made by Friday 21st January 2011 at the latest.

YOU MUST ALSO ENSURE ALL OF THE ABOVE CONSULTATION/APPROVAL HAS TAKEN PLACE AND IS EVIDENCED BY COVERING EMAILS BEFORE YOU SUBMIT THE FORM. Please return the form to the Secretary of the School Teaching and Quality Enhancement Committee (STQEC) in line with the above deadline. If this is not the case the proposal may not be approved for submission to the Committee at this time since this does not allow sufficient time for full consideration to take place and for any possible further work/areas of clarification to be dealt with. Following approval (where appropriate) by the School TQEC notification of the amended module should be made to the College Programmes Committee via Academic Standards and Quality (Registry Services). At this time ASQ will notify Planning and Business Systems and the required changes will be made to the Birkbeck Student Information System (BSIS).
