  • There will be an official timeout at the twelve (12), eight (8) and four (4) minute mark of each half for substitutions.

PLAYING TIME:

  • Equal playing time is the guiding rule:

No player may play more than one, 4-minute period than any other player on the team

Guidelines (note exception below for team of 11 players)

  • 10 players = All play 4 periods

  • 5 players = All play all periods
  • 11 players = Three play 5 periods; Four play 4 periods; Three play 3 periods

(A player who fills in for injury, foul-out or ejection is not charged a period for completing the period. If the player is lost for the game, lineups should be adjusted to meet the “no more than one period more than any other player” rule)

Overtime

  • Any 5 players who are available to play may play in first overtime period
  • Remaining available players on the bench must be used during second overtime period
  • Any 5 players who are available to play may play in sudden death period
  • Players may be substituted at the following times:
  • Between halves;
  • At the twelve (12), eight (8) four (4) minute marks of each quarter;
  • In the event of an injury; or
  • When a player fouls out or is ejected.

ALTERNATING POSSESSION:

  • There will be a jump ball to start the game and any overtime periods, after which the alternating possession rule will be in effect.

DEFENSES:

  • The following defenses are permitted:
  • Person to person;
  • Double and triple teaming;
  • Switching;
  • Zone and/or sagging; and
  • Full court pressing.
  • Permitted only in the second half
  • Can be used only if the pressing team is behind or ahead by less than ten (10) points.

Defense rule violations (per team): First violation = warning; Second violation – technical foul

TECHNICAL FOULS:

  • If a technical foul is issued, the other team will shoot two (2) free throws and will be given possession of the ball.
  • Technical fouls will be given for, but not limited to, the following violations:
  • Player wearing any type of jewelry, to include earrings. It is no longer sufficient to tape over earrings;
  • Player wearing a jersey number other than what is recorded in the official score book;
  • Player entering the playing floor without checking in with the scorekeeper and being waved on by the referee(s); or
  • Any conduct deemed by the referee to be detrimental to the spirit of the game.
  • If a player or coach is physically or verbally abusive to a referee, another coach, or another player; or receives two technical fouls, the player or coach will be ejected from the game.
  • If a player or coach is ejected from a game, the player or coach will also be suspended from the next scheduled game and may not attend that game. The league director may increase the suspension, up to and including for the remainder of the season and tournament, for an ejection due to egregious circumstances.
  • If a player or coach is ejected from a game a second time during the season, the player or coach will be suspended for the remainder of the season unless the league director agrees there are extenuating circumstances and that lesser disciplinary action is warranted. In the event of a request for a lesser action, a meeting will be held between the league director, the RYBA President, the two coaches involved in the game in which the second ejection occurred, and the involved referees, if possible. At a minimum the league director will, prior to the meeting, get a report on the ejection from the involved referees; this can be written or verbal.

SCORING – BOOK AND BOARD:

  • Personal fouls, team fouls, and running score must be recorded in the scorebook at the scorer’s table.
  • The scorebook will be the official record of the game, not the scoreboard.

FOULS AND FOULSHOOTING:

  • Fouls will be shot from the free throw line.
  • Bonus fouls will be shot on the seventh team foul in a half and each team foul thereafter until the tenth team foul.
  • Double bonus will be shot on the tenth team foul in a half and each team foul thereafter.
  • A player is permitted five (5) personal fouls per game. A player fouls out of the game upon obtaining their fifth personal foul.
  • Player technical fouls are also personal fouls.

PLAYING WITH LESS THAN 5 PLAYERS:

  • A team may start a game and play with 4 players. A team may not start a game or play with 3 or less players. If 3 or less players are available to play at any time, that team will forfeit. (see exceptions below)

1) If the number of available players decreases to 3 due to foul-out, the team may continue to play with the player who fouled out in order to maintain 4 players on the court. Each successive foul called on the player with 5 fouls will be an automatic technical foul. Automatic technical foul (as opposed to referee discretion technical foul) will not be held to the 2-technical-ejection rule.

2) If the number of available players decreases to 3 due to injury, if the team has a fouled-out player on the bench, he may be reinserted into the game to maintain 4 players on the court. Each successive foul called on the player with 5 fouls will be an automatic technical foul. Automatic technical foul (as opposed to referee discretion technical foul) will not be held to the 2-technical-ejection rule.

3) A player who has been ejected from the game due to the 2-technical-ejection rule, or due to referee discretion, may in no case be reinserted into a game.

OTHER:

  • Any rules not covered above are covered by the Minnesota State High School League rules.
