A Message from the Principal

I want to thank the more than ___ families that attended an Open House this month. We received positive feedback on the new format which allowed for more flexibility in the evening, and provided an opportunity for parents to attend teacher presentations for more than one child.

If you were unable to attend an Open House, please feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher to get an update.

K1 Welcomes New Students to School

K1 students have transitioned nicely from the start of school. On a daily basis, we are seeing routines being learned, friendships being made and lots of classroom exploration happening! The K1 students will move into their first unit next week: Family. We are excited to get to know our students' families better and create a family picture wall. This K1 year will be filled with lots of hands on learning opportunities!

Grade 2 News

Second graders came to the upper campus ready to learn! Their teachers are so pleased with their enthusiasm and we have enjoyed a great first few weeks of school. This past week we have read about astronauts in space, the solar system, and in math we have been solving some challenging word problems. Coming up we will read and learn about camping, work in science notebooks and learn about rhythm and beat in music class. Reading assessments will continue for several weeks and reports will be sent home following completion. It was a pleasure to meet so many parents at our Parents’ Night and we look forward to an awesome year of working together!

Before School at the Roosevelt

Upper Campus

We will again offer Before School from 7:30-8:15. The cost is $5.00 day and students may attend individual days or the full week. We are happy to continue our partnership with Little Voices for Upper Campus after school needs.

New Paraprofessional Assignments

Most of our Paraprofessionals are working with different grade level teams this year:

Grade 1 – Ms. Glenny Rodriguez

Grade 2 – Ms. Joselyn Sobers

Grade 3 – Ms. Eileen Lahey

Grade 4 – Ms. Donna Boland

Grade 5 – Ms. Bethany Simons

Grade 6 – Ms. Paula Campia

Grade 7 – Ms. Laurel Costello

Each of these paraprofessionals is an integral part of their team providing student support.

Students in Room 102 help to inflate their new seats!

Mrs. Maynard Receives a Grant

Through a generous donation from Google and a private donor from DonorsChoose.org, students in room 102 now have an alternative form of seating. The students in room 102 are "inflatable" about their new seats. Last week we received yoga balls in place of chairs for each student.

Research states that replacing the traditional chairs in a classroom with yoga balls is proven to improve student learning and posture. Students are able to move in their seats while still being able to focus on learning. Using this research, teacher Mrs. Maynard applied for the grant. When you go by room 102 and you see a little bouncing, don't be alarmed, the achievement is the same, we just incorporate moving into our learning.

Eat Smart, Stay Smart

at the Roosevelt School

We are excited to announce that that the lower campus received one of BID-Milton’s 2014 Community Benefits Grants! This grant will fund the "Eat Smart, Stay Smart" program, a 5 week nutrition education series for students that will run in October and November. This program also includes a parent component, including a "Parents as Partners" night on October 15thwhere you can learn more about the nutrition topics being discussed in the classroom, and a grocery store tour onNovember 13thto provide tips on shopping for healthy family meals.

The grant will be presented on Saturday, September 27th at the Community Walk at Milton Hospital. We encourage all families from the Roosevelt to join us for this fun event. It costs just $5 each for adults and teens, and children under 13 are free. In addition to the 3.1 mile and 0.5 mile walk options, there are also health screenings, face painting, an obstacle course, and a BBQ lunch - all included with your walk registration.
