Program Descriptions 2017-2018

VERY IMPORTANT: You must complete a background check before you are able to volunteer at Polser. If you are unsure if you have completed one in the last three years, contact the office and they can check for you. Room Parent and Grade Level Coordinator (Classroom Parties)

  • Responsibilities include acknowledging your teacher’s birthday and facilitating 3 class parties throughout the year (Winter Party on 12/20/2017, Valentine’s Party on 2/14/2018, and End of the Year Party on 6/1/2018).
  • Classroom parties occur near the end of the school day and generally include a snack and activity.
  • Parties are planned as a group with your grade level coordinator and teachers. The grade level coordinator will purchase and distribute most of the supplies – you just need to be at the party to keep the activities going.
  • Immediate need for one Room Parent per classroom and one Grade Level Coordinator per grade.

Kindergarten Lunch

  • Immediate need for kindergarten lunch helpers to assist with opening milk, ketchup packets, etc. during Kindergarten lunches (10:40am-11:10am daily).

PTA Board Member

  • There are currently four open vacancies on our PTA Board for the 2017-2018 school year.
  • Council Rep (x2): Attend the LISD council meetings 2nd Wednesday of the month and report back all the new information to the Polser PTA Board.
  • Volunteer Coordinator: Help coordinate with the school to find great volunteers for all PTA and school events as needed. Using SignUpGenius, post volunteer opportunities and make available on the PTA website.
  • Polserfest Chair: Form committee to head the activities need to put on the Polserfest event on 4/28/2018. Committee will be formed with volunteers from the PTA who have background and experience to help provide feedback for activities. Committee will not begin to meet until January 2018.

Polserfest

  • School wide carnival event to be held 4/28/2018, 5:00-8:00pm that includes carnival games, concessions, outdoor activities (i.e. train and bounce house), stage activities, etc.
  • Volunteers needed for set-up, clean-up, and activities during Polserfest.
  • Many volunteer opportunities for volunteers who work full time, part time, or stay at home parents.

Silent Auction

  • There will be three Silent Auctions throughout the year; two smaller auctions during the Fall Fling (Monster Mash) in October and the Spring Fling (Sock Hop) in March as well as a larger auction during Polserfest in April.
  • Volunteers will be needed to contact pre-selected donors for donations, including classroom and parent contributions, pick up donations, and write thank you cards.
  • Volunteers will be needed to participate in Silent Auction setup, checkout and distribution processes.

Watch D.O.G.S.

  • Volunteer to help out on the school campus for the entire school day! Volunteer options open to all positive male role models for the students.
  • Provide extra sets of eyes and ears to enhance school security and reduce bullying and real and important help for the teachers and the students.
  • Sign up for available days for Watch D.O.G.S. will be available on the PTA website throughout the year.

Holiday Shop & Book Fair

  • There will be two book fairs (9/11/2017 thru 9/15/2017 and 2/26/2018 thru 3/2/2018) that are run each day of the week between 8:30am-3:30pm. All money made feeds back into the school by giving scholastic news to every student in the school, books provided to all teachers in need, and books are given to students yearly.
  • The Holiday Shop will be open 12/11/2017 thru 12/15/2017, 8:30am-3:30pm to provide children the opportunity to purchase gifts for their family members, friends, or teachers at a very low cost.

Fall Fling (Monster Mash) & Spring Fling (Sock Hop)

  • Two dances will be held next year on Friday evenings on 10/27/2017 and 3/23/2018. Dances include a DJ, concessions, mini silent auction, and other activities TBD.
  • The Monster Mash will be paired with a Haunted House (teen volunteers will be needed).
  • Volunteers to help set up, run concessions, and clean up.

Chess Club

  • Kids grades 2nd – 5th meet Mondays after school to work on their chess skills.
  • Parents will be needed to help keep score as well as supervise the kids during chess club meetings throughout the year as well as during the chess tournament in November.

Movie Nights

  • There will be two PTA Movie Nights on 9/22/2017 and 4/6/2018.
  • Come in your pajamas and bring your blanket, pillow, bean bag, lawn chair, etc. to enjoy a night out with friends while watching a good movie.
  • Concessions will be sold and the movie will be raffled off at the end of the night.
  • Parents must stay with the child; this is not a drop off event.

PTA Meetings – Ice Cream Social, Spaghetti Dinner, Choir Concerts and More

  • We host 4 general PTA meetings throughout the year (9/14/2017, 12/14/2017, 3/8/2018, and 5/24/2018) to keep the general PTA informed of everything that we have or plan to accomplish. We encourage everyone to come and have your voice heard. You are your child’s best advocate and we love to hear your ideas on how we can make the PTA work better for your child.
  • The Ice Cream Social will be held during the 9/14/2017 PTA Meeting, the Spaghetti Dinner will be held during the 3/8/2018 PTA Meeting and the Fall and Spring Choir Concerts will be on 12/14/2017 and 5/24/2018.
  • These are social events that are free events geared toward getting to know your fellow Polser families.

Reflections/One World Challenge

  • PTA Reflectionsis a nationally acclaimed student recognition program to encourage artistic creativity in the classroom and at home. Students of all grades and abilities may participate and explore the arts based on the 2017-2018 theme:Within Reach
  • The One World Challenge is to promote positive actions and small behavior changes that can make a big difference.
  • More information on these programs will be available on the PTA website and will be sent home with your children.

Arctic Press

  • Artic Press is used to encourage children in all grades to be Arctic Press Authors and encourage and promote writing skills.
  • The PTA will publish books written by the children of each grade level (PreK-5th).
  • More information on these programs will be available on the PTA website and will be sent home with your children.

Spirit Nights

  • We will have several spirit nights throughout the year to help raise funds for the PTA! The spirit nights will be held at different restaurants within the area. All you need to do is come, mention our name when purchasing your dinner, and enjoy dinner with your family and friends. Part of the proceeds will go right back to the school.
  • Current known Spirit Nights for the next school year are 9/26/2017 and 5/1/2018 at ChickFilA in The Colony and 11/7/2017 at Spring Creek BBQ. More to come!

Field Day

  • Field Day is an event run by the school to give the kids a fun dayspentengaging in outdooractivities. They also get to enjoy snow cones provided by the PTA!
  • Field Day will be held on 4/13/2018. Parent volunteers to help run Field Day are always welcome!

Curriculum Night/In-n-Out Truck Night

  • Curriculum Night is an educational open house hosted by Polser which will be held on 1/25/2018. This is a fun interactive night you can meet the teacher, school team, network with other parents, as well as participating in fun activities with your children.
  • Also available on Curriculum Night will be our In-n-Out Truck fundraiser! Pre-sale tickets will be available before the event with limited tickets available the day of the event. More information will be sent home with your child.

National Bike/Walk to School Day

  • National Bike/Walk to school day will be held on 10/4/2017. These days are to help promote children to incorporate the regular physical activity they need each day while also forming healthy habits that can last a lifetime.
  • Students riding their bike or walking to school will be greeted by the CVMS cheerleaders and ChickFilA cow. Stickers, coupons, and other incentives will be passed out as students arrive to the school.

Staff/Teacher Appreciation

  • We like to celebrate our staff throughout the year to let them know how much we appreciate everything they do for us! We will have 3 staff luncheons (October, January, and April) and we encourage all parents to participate in by sending in your delicious food or favorite store-bought items. We also cater one meal on field day to make this day easier for the Polser Staff.
  • We also have a couple of Sonic days throughout the year and a dedicate a week full of fun tokens to show our appreciation during Staff Appreciation Week 5/7/2017 thru 5/11/2017.

Red Ribbon Week

  • PTA and Polser bring in different programs and activities to help kids say no to drugs.
  • Red Ribbon Week will be held 10/23/2017 thru 10/27/2017. This year’s theme is “Your future is key, so stay drug free!”

Polar Bear Dash

  • This is a fundraiser run by Polser to help bring in funds to support the children throughout the year. The event promotes healthy, active lifestyles for our kids!
  • The Polar Bear Dash will be held during the school day in the school parking lot on 11/3/2017. Students will run in their designated Fun Run t-shirt for approximately 30 minutes. Parent cheerleaders are always encouraged to attend! Pom poms, noise makers, and hand-made posters will be available.

5th Grade Celebration

  • The 5th Grade Celebration is two separate events held at the end of the year to say goodbye to outgoing 5th graders and their families as they celebrate their transition from Polser.
  • A 5th Grade Balloon Release will take place on 5/31/2018 in the morning.
  • A 5th Grade Celebration Party will take place on 6/7/2018 and will include a light breakfast and ceremony.
