Welcome! This year we will be working on 6th grade Common Core State Standards. Students are required to follow all Van Nuys Middle School/Magnet rules. Please see the Binder Reminder for VNMS’s general expectations for student behavior and academic work. The following is in addition to those rules that are expected to be followed by all students in the class. Parents and students should read and then sign this form.

Assignments

Homework is due the following school day, unless otherwise noted.

For my English class: Students are expected to read at least 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week for homework. Students should be checking out Reading Counts books (at least 15,000 words for Honors). Books should reflect the student’s level of reading (most Honors students have a Lexile level of 800 +). Reading logs should be completed daily. The teacher will check for completeness daily. Students have 2 weeks to finish reading their book. Reading logs will be collected every 2 weeks, and a Reading Counts Test will be taken to prove that the student has read and understood the book.

Some homework assignments will require Internet research. If the Internet at home is unavailable, students need to do their homework/project assignment at the school library before or after school. Some assignments will require working with a group.

Homework will be posted on the school’s website:vannuysms.org

Grading

Letter grades will be given by dividing the number of points earned by the total points possible. The percentage that is then derived will be converted to a letter grade as follows:

A = 90% - 100% 40% = Homework/ Classwork

B = 80% - 89% 50% = Tests/ projects C = 70% - 79% 10% = Participation

D = 60% - 69%

Fail = 0% - 59%

Work Habits marks will primarily be determined by the timeliness of homework and attention given to class work.

Cooperation marks will be based on the behavior by the student in the classroom.

  • E = Excellent
  • S = Satisfactory
  • U = Unsatisfactory

Tardiness, Absences, Makeup

Students are considered tardy if they are not in their seats ready to learn before the bell rings.

When students have an excused absence, work will be accepted for full credit, if turned in on the day of return, or the following day. Students must write “Absent” on their paper and it must be approved by the teacher.

All work must be made up. Late work will receive half credit.

Behavior

Students are to conduct themselves in a mature and cooperative manner. All students must show respect at all times. Students must abide by all classroom criteria.
