For any developing country, it is imperative to develop alternative sources of energy for achieving energy security and reducing the strain on fossil fuels. The Indian government has set forth National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) to have larger share of renewable power generation in total energy mix and by 2020 aims to have15% of renewable energy in the total energy mix.
Central and state governments have kick-started many green initiatives through various National Action Plans, policies and supportive regulations.
Incentives/Promotional schemes:
-Though profitable companies who have the right capital costs are not dependent on Government subsidies or incentives, the government has nevertheless encouraged renewable energy generation mainly through:-
-States obliged by NAPCC renewable purchase are expected to purchase a minimum of 10% of their annual energy purchases from renewable sources by 2012 and 15% by 2020.
-Renewable Energy Certificate Mechanism is a national mechanism to initiate a new avenue for generators and consumers.
-Renewable Purchase Obligation Regulation requires each state to have a certain percentage of purchased energyfor total consumption from renewable sources facilitating grid connectivity.
-The Union Minister, New and Renewable Energy, Government of India has assured the extension of generation based incentive from 11th plan to 12th plan.
-MNRE aims to install additional 41000 MW of renewable energy by the end of the twelfth Five Year Plan in 2017
Focus on Wind/Renewable Energy:
-India is the fifth largest globally in the wind power market, with an installed capacity of 17967 MW as of August 2012 and in terms of new capacity in 2012, India is ranked as the third largest in the world.
-This accounts for 72% of India’s renewable capacity, which is expected to increase to 24 GW by 2013. The potential for wind energy in India is marked by the country’s overall economic growth, as well as the country’s strong incentive to further develop renewable energy technology.
-India has planned a tremendous scale up of renewable energy in the 12thand 13thPlan. The Indian renewable energy landscape has witnessed the maturing of the sector with the emergence of focused Independent Power Producers(IPP) movinginto renewable energy
