Dear Parents/Guardians,

Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year. My name is Lisa Pallari, and I am looking forward to the opportunity to inspire and empower your child this year.

The following syllabus contains important rules, guidelines and objectives, which should help your student have a successful school year. The syllabuswill be reviewed in class, but I would like for you and your student to read and discuss the information together.

The last page of the syllabus, the contact sheet, needs to be returned with parent and student signatures. The syllabus is yours to use as a reference throughout the school year. Thank you in advance for your support this year, and I look forward to meeting you during Back to School Night on Wednesday, August 23, 2017.

Math:

This course will include the study of California Common Core 6th grade mathstandards, whichwill be delivered using Carnegie Learning.This curriculumwill engage students by activating their prior knowledge and real world experiences, generating curiosity. Students will develop their understanding of mathematics through a variety of activities, such as real-world problems, sorting activities, worked examples, and peer analysis, all in an environment where collaboration, conversations, and questioning are routinely practiced. They will then be given opportunities to reflect and evaluate what they’ve learned.

Science:

The course will include the study of the Next Generation Integrated Science for 6th grade. Students will learn about earth science, such as weather and climate; life science, such as its structure, function and information; andphysical science, such as energy.

Course Expectations:

Be on time.

Come in quietly and be prepared to work.

Be respectful to self and others.

ALLschool rules to be followed at all times.

When you come in: Take out binder, planner and pencil. (Binder and supplies are your responsibility to have each day.)

Write in planner everyday.

Have homework from the night before available for class discussions or turning in.

Missing homework or class assignment can result in lunch detention.

All papers must have correct heading: First and Last name, Date, Class and Block.

If classwork is not finished during class timeit will be required to be finished ashomework, unless otherwise stated.

You are responsible for making up work you miss when you are absent. Due no later than a week from date returned.

Group work: everyone is responsiblefor participating in his or her designated groups.

NOgum, food or drinks allowedin classroom (Snacks are allowed outside during break)

Subscribe to my website and check nightly.Update your planner as needed.

Check your grades at least every other week (Retakes of missing assessments or assessments with gradeslower than a 75%allowedafter required notes or assignments have been turned in.)

Classroom Policy:

  • Be respectful of self and others.
  • Follow classroom expectations to the best of your ability.
  • Follow directions the first time they are given.
  • Allow everyone the opportunity to learn.

GradingPolicy:

  • Grades are broken down into two categories: Academic Content and Academic Behavior.
  • Academic​ ​Content​ ​will​ ​make​ ​up​ ​90%​ ​of​ ​the​ ​grade​ ​and​ ​be​ ​made​ ​up​ ​of​ ​the following:

  • Academic​ ​Behavior​ ​will​ ​make​ ​up​ ​10%​ ​of​ ​the​ ​grade​ ​and​ ​be​ ​made​ ​up​ ​of​ ​the following:

❏ Precision and Accuracy

  • Most assignments and assessments will be point based, translated to percentage to letter grade.

A 94-100% A- 90-93%

B+ 86-89% B 83-85% B- 80-82%

C+ 76-79% C 73-75%C- 70-72%

D+ 66-69% D 63-65%D- 60-62%

F 59% and below

Disciplinary Policy:

Students are expected to always follow Buljan’s PBIS policy, which is to Be Safe, Accountable, Respectful, and Kind; thestudent handbook as well asmy classroom policy (stated above). If rules are broken, students will be given a verbal warning the first time they do so. The second time will result in time out sheet and parent contact. Any infraction thereafter may result in detentions and/or office referral. (IEPs, 504s and BSPs will be honored.)

My responsibility as your teacher:

(A) Help students learn the California Common Core standards for Math and Science. (B) Be respectful of all students. (C) Inform students of their academic progress. (D) Assist students who are struggling.

(E) Stimulate the student’s intellectual curiosity and help students fulfill their own personal goals and expectations. (F) Putting important information, such as important dates, and homework assignments on my website as well as keeping grade book up to date.

Suggested suppliesfor the class:

• 3 inch binder (one used for all classes)/Dividers

• Binder paper

• Pencil pouch

• Several sharpened Pencils with erasers and Pens (blue or black ink only) (Please keep stocked daily)

• Colored pencils -8 different colors

• Highlighters (pink, yellow, green, blue)

• Fine Tip White Board Markers (black)

• Glue Stick or glue

• Scissors

  • Clorox Wipes (or disinfecting wipes)
  • Colored Pencils
  • Small Scissors
  • New or Used Reading Books (age-appropriate)

  • White Board Markers (Blue or Black)
  • Gallon sized zip lock bags
