THIS SPECIFICATION SECTION HAS BEEN PREPARED TO ASSIST DESIGN PROFESSIONALS IN THE PREPARATION OF PROJECT OR OFFICE MASTER SPECIFICATIONS. IT FOLLOWS GUIDELINES ESTABLISHED BY THE CONSTRUCTION SPECIFICATIONS INSTITUTE, AND THEREFORE MAY BE USED WITH MOST MASTER SPECIFICATION SYSTEMS WITH MINOR EDITING.

1.2 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

A. Performance Requirements:

1. Provide doors with label for the fire rating classification, [Warnock Hersey [1-1/2 hr] [3 hr]] [Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc., [3 hr] [1 1/2 hr] [1 hr] [3/4 hr]].

1.3 SUBMITTALS

A. Reference Section 01 33 00 Submittal Procedures; submit the following items:

1. Product Data.

2. Shop Drawings: Include special conditions not detailed in Product Data. Show interface with adjacent work.

3. Quality Assurance/Control Submittals:

a. Provide proof of manufacturer ISO 9001:2008 registration.

b. Provide proof of manufacturer and installer qualifications - see 1.4 below.

c. Provide manufacturer's installation instructions.

4. Closeout Submittals:

a. Operation and Maintenance Manual.

b. Certificate stating that installed materials comply with this specification.

1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Qualifications:

1. Manufacturer Qualifications: ISO 9001:2008 registered and a minimum five years experience in producing rolling counter fire doors with integral frames of the type specified.

2. Installer Qualifications: Manufacturer's approval.

1.5 DELIVERY STORAGE AND HANDLING

A. Reference Section 01 66 00 Product Storage and Handling Requirements.

1.6 WARRANTY

A. Standard Warranty: Two years from date of shipment against defects in material and workmanship.

B. Maintenance: Submit for owner’s consideration and acceptance of a maintenance service agreement for installed products.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.1 MANUFACTURER

2.2 MATERIALS

A. Curtain:

1. Slats: No. 10, interlocked flat-faced slats, 1-1/4 inches (31.8 mm) high by 3/8 inch (9.5 mm) deep, 22 gauge ASTM A 653, Commercial Quality, galvanized steel with a bottom bar constructed of tubular extruded steel measuring 2” (50.8 mm) high by 1-1/4” (31.8 mm) deep.

OR

1. Slats: No. 10, interlocked flat-faced slats, 1-1/4 inches (31.8 mm) high by 3/8 inch (9.5 mm) deep, 22 gauge interconnected strip stainless steel slats #4 polish with a bottom bar constructed of tubular stainless steel, 2” (50.8 mm) high by 1-1/4” (31.8 mm) deep, #4 polish.

2. Fabricate continuous interlocking slat sections with high strength malleable steel endlocks riveted to slat ends per UL requirements.

3. Slat Finish:

a. FinalCoteÔ Coating System to include an ASTM A 653 galvanized base coating, bonderized coating for prime coat adhesion, corrosion inhibitin primer .2 mils per side, and thermosetting [gray] [tan] [white] polyester top coat with a minimum thickness of .6 mils each side.

OR

a. ColorCoteÔ Coating System to include an ASTM A 653 galvanized base coating, bonderized coating for prime coat adhesion, and factory applied thermosetting powder coating applied with a minimum thickness of 2.5 mils. The color shall be selected by the architect and shall be chosen from [standard color chart] [custom color selection].

a. Stainless steel: #4 polish.

4. Bottom Bar Finish:

a. Steel: Factory applied [bronze] [gray] [tan] [white] baked-on thermosetting powder coat.

a.  Steel: Factory applied baked-on thermosetting powder coat. The finish shall be the same Cookson ColorCote finish as indicated in the curtain section.

OR

a. Stainless steel: No. 4 finish.

B. Head and Jamb Frame:

1. Stainless Steel: 16 gauge stainless steel formed shapes.

2. Finish: Stainless steel: No. 4 finish.

DELETE BELOW IF STAINLESS STEEL COUNTERTOP IS NOT TO BE PROVIDED WITH ROLLING COUNTER FIRE DOOR WITH INTEGRAL FRAME.

C. Countertop: 14 gauge stainless steel formed shape; No. 4 finish.

D. Counterbalance Shaft Assembly:

1. Barrel: Steel pipe of not less than 4” in diameter capable of supporting curtain load with maximum deflection of 0.03 inches per foot (2.5 mm per meter) of width.

2. Spring Balance: Oil-tempered torsion spring assembly designed for proper balance of door to ensure that maximum effort to operate will not exceed 30 lbs (133 N). Provide wheel for applying and adjusting spring torque.

OR

Tube Motor Shaft Assembly

1. Barrel: Steel pipe capable of supporting curtain load with maximum deflection of 0.03 inches per foot (2.5 mm per meter) of width.

E. Brackets: Fabricate from reinforced 11 gauge steel plate with bearings at rotating support points to support counterbalance shaft assembly and form end closures for hood.

1. Finish:

a. Steel: Phosphate treatment followed by baked-on [dark bronze] [gray] [tan] [white] polyester powder coat; minimum 2 mils cured film thickness; ASTM D-3363 pencil hardness: H or better.

OR

a. Steel: ASTM A 123, Grade 85 zinc coating, hot-dip galvanized.

OR

a. Stainless Steel: No. 4 finish

F. Hood and mechanism covers: [24 gauge galvanized steel] [24 gauge stainless steel] with reinforced top and bottom edges.

1. Finish:

1. Masterkeyable cylinder operable from [coil] [fascia] [both] side[s] of bottom bar. [Provide interlock switches on motor operated units.]

B. Countertop: 1 ½ Hour UL Labeled, 1-5/8” (41 mm) thick, plastic laminate covered, size and configuration made for opening size and wall construction. Color as selected by Architect from standard range of Wilson Art or Formica plastic laminates.

OR

B. Countertop: 1 ½ Hour UL Labeled, 2” (51 mm) thick, 14 gauge #4 finish stainless steel. [“T” shaped design for face of wall mounted unit] [Rectangular shape design for between jambs mounted unit] of size and configuration for opening size and wall construction.

C. Photoelectric Smoke/Heat Detector: UL listed.

2.4 OPERATION

A. Auto-Test Series Tube Motor Operated: Supply Electric Tube Motor Operator - rated for a maximum of 10 cycles per day, cULus recognized, rated (50nm) or (100nm) as recommended by door manufacturer for size and type of door, 115 Volts, 1 Phase, 60 Hertz. Provide complete with electric tube motor, maintenance free electric brake, emergency manual crank hoist and control station(s). Motor shall be protected against overload with an auto-reset thermal sensing device. Operator shall be equipped with an emergency manual crank hoist assembly that safely cuts operator power when engaged. A disconnect chain shall not be required to engage or release the manual crank hoist. Operator shall be capable of 10-14 RPM. Fully adjustable, mechanical internal worm limit switch mechanism shall synchronize the operator with the door.

a. Automatic closure shall be activated by [a local smoke/fire detector] [a central smoke/fire alarm system].

b. Doors shall maintain an average closing speed of not more than 12” per second during automatic closing. When automatic closure is activated, electric sensing edge and push button are inoperable.

c. Doors shall be fail-safe and close upon power failure.

d. Resetting of spring tension or mechanical dropouts shall not be required. Upon restoration of power and/or clearing of the alarm signal, doors shall immediately reset by opening with the push button.

e. The electrical contractor shall mount the control station(s) and supply the appropriate disconnect switch, all conduit and wiring per the overhead door wiring instructions.

OR

A. Auto-Test FDO-A10 Motor Operator: Door shall operate at a speed of 2/3 foot per second by an open drip-proof electric motor with gear reducer in oil bath. The motor operator shall include a geared limit switch. The motor starter shall be housed in a NEMA 1 housing and include a 24 volt control power supply, a solid state controller, and complete terminal strip to facilitate field wiring. The motor operator shall be activated by [a 3 button push-button station] [other controls as selected] in a NEMA 1 enclosure. The motor shall be (115 volts single phase) (460 volts three phase]. The motor operator shall be mounted to the door bracket as shown on drawings. All motor operators and controls shall be listed for use with fire doors.

a. Automatic closure shall be activated by [a local smoke/fire detector] [a central smoke/fire alarm system].

b. Upon activation of the alarm system, the motor operator shall power close the door. If there is an obstruction in the opening, the door shall automatically open and close again. The sensing edge shall continue to cycle the door up and down until the obstruction is removed and the door can fully close or the door has cycled 3 times, in which case the door shall stop on the obstruction. If at any time the obstruction is removed, with the continuation of the alarm signal, the door will continue to a fully closed position. To reset the door, push the up control station. The door shall return to the fully open position.

c. Doors shall maintain a closing speed of not less than 6 inches (152 mm) nor more than 24 inches (610 mm) per second. When automatic closure is activated, electric sensing edge and push button are inoperable.

d. Doors shall be fail-safe and close upon power failure.

e. Resetting of spring tension or mechanical dropouts shall not be required. Upon restoration of power and/or clearing of the alarm signal, doors shall immediately reset by opening with the push button.

f. The electrical contractor shall mount the control station(s) and supply the appropriate disconnect switch, all conduit and wiring per the overhead door wiring instructions.

OR

A. Manual Auto-Test™ [Chain] [Crank] Hoist: Provide combination [chain] [crank] / controlled closing system operator including [endless steel chain and chain keeper] [removable hand crank and geared reduction unit]. Integral to the unit is a releasing device for connection to a central alarm system or local smoke detectors and a governor to control automatic closing speed.

a. Automatic closure shall be activated by [a central smoke/fire alarm system] [a local smoke/fire detector] [power outage in excess of 10 seconds].

b. Doors shall maintain a closing speed of not more than 12” (305 mm) per second during automatic closing.

c. Doors shall be fail-safe and close upon power failure.

c. Resetting of spring tension or mechanical dropouts shall not be required. Simply open door by use of chain operator after alarm is cleared and/or power is restored.

OR

A.  Simple-Test™ Series Motor Operator, cULus listed, Totally Enclosed Non Ventilated gear head operator(s) rated (1/3) (1/2) or (3/4) hp as recommended by door manufacture for size and type of door, ____Volts, ____Phase. Provide high starting torque, industrial type electric motor and factory pre-wired motor control terminals, manually reset overload device, maintenance free solenoid actuated brake, adjustable rotary limit switch mechanism, emergency manual chain hoist and control station(s). Primary speed reduction shall be heavy-duty, lubricated gears with mechanical braking to hold the door in any position. Operator shall be equipped with an emergency manual chain hoist and interlock assembly that safely cuts operator power when engaged. Operator drive and door driven sprockets shall be provided with #50 roller chain.
