Location
The base for this role is flexible and will be agreed with your role manager. You could volunteer from home or in your local Alzheimer’s Society office. The level of commitment for this role can be agreed based upon your availability and will be discussed at your first meeting with the Side by Side Coordinator. This could be during afternoons, evening or weekends.
Why we need you…
As a Side by Side telephone volunteer you will provide friendly, tailored conversations with people living with dementia. You will be connected with people based on their interests and preferences. Your involvement will support people with dementia to feel less isolated and focusses on individual’s strengths to remain connected, feel valued and more confident.

This role will suit you if you are…
  • Passionate about supporting, enabling and empowering people with dementia and have a committed, flexible approach
  • If you’ve ever been described as ‘chatty’ and/or a good listener
  • Are comfortable volunteering and making calls/delivering activities from remote locations
  • Capable of volunteeringwithin service boundaries, following all appropriate policies and procedures.

The impact you’ll make...
  • Keeping people connected: You will enable and empower people who are living with dementia to stay involved and connected over the phone, by providing person centred conversation and support
  • Reducing Isolation: Your role will enable people with dementia to be less lonely or isolated

What’s involved?
  • This role will require you to make person centred phone calls, from any location, to people living with dementia
  • You will make these calls regularly and reliably as agreed with the person with dementia
  • Volunteering with sensitivity, confidentiality and in accordance with self-expressed needs of someone living with dementia

Have you got what it takes?
  • Have good verbal communication and listening skills on the phone
  • You are anunderstanding person able to support someone with empathy
  • Recognise the importance of making people feel valued, treat people of all backgrounds with respect and dignity and have the ability to engage
  • Able to follow policies, procedures, guidance and can volunteer within service boundaries

  • We will reimburse any agreed out of pocket expenses in line with our Expenses Policy.
  • To bekept up to date with the Alzheimer’s Society’s policies and procedures.
