ROLE OVERVIEW

The Learning Community Centre Program at Willowra aims to promote life-long learning by providing education and training opportunities for community members to improve their employment opportunities and life skills as well as consolidating core numeracy and literacy skills required for further education and training.

The Program seeks to create a vibrant Centre for the community to engage in education and training courses, access computers, the internet and a library, and teach, celebrate and store Warlpiri language and culture. The Centre aims to provide for a wide range of formal and informal education and training by coordinating RTO’s to deliver training. a Library service and strong language and culture program. The Centre should be a community space, open ‘people hours’as negotiated with the local reference group.

The Mentor/ Training Coordinator Position will be responsible for working with the community to design and implement a training plan which includes both formal and informal education and training as well as language and culture projects and activities. The Position will also work with individuals to document their learning histories and interests and develop achievable and documented learning pathways.

The Position will be responsible for delivering training directly where possible, liaising with RTO’s to deliver training, liaising with other organizations to provide informal learning opportunities and supervising and supporting the community to use the computer, internet and library facilities on a daily basis.

The position will work closely with a Local Coordinator to mentor and support them to gain the skills required to manage and coordinate the Learning Centre.

The newly built Centre shares a location with Willowra childcare and a Youth centre.

Collaboration aboutprograms, and management responsibilities will be necessary.

STATEMENT OF DUTIES

  1. Develop the Willowra Learning Centre through a positive and dynamic relationship with the local Working Group and facilitate regular meetings of the group. Bring ideas to that group and work with their direction.
  2. Develop a strong two way learning environment and establish the Learning Centre as a safe and neutral place.
  1. Establish training and education priorities in consultation with the local community and Centre Working group and develop annual key performance indicators against each priority. Develop an annual and term based training plan.
  1. Liaise with Childcare and Youth centre staff, and the Local Advisory Board of the Central Desert Shire Council where necessary, and provide updates on the activities of the centre.
  1. Mentor and supervise local staff employed in the Centre .
  1. Facilitate the delivery of education and training in areas prioritised by the community and offered either by external trainers or where possible delivering training directly.
  1. Provide mentoring and tutoring support to community members completing training courses, including where applicable liaising between RTO’s, students and their employers to ensure clear communication between these parties on course requirements.
  1. Support the management of the library including the collection, copying and archiving of material for the cultural database, AraIrititja.
  1. Support a safe keeping place for a collection of cultural and historical documents / visual images wherever possible
  1. Provide flexible community access to the Centre, as reasonably directed by the Reference group.
  2. Collect quantitative and qualitative data as required for reporting against purposes and use this information to report annually against agreed Key Performance Indicators (KPI)
  1. Attend regular local community inter-agency meetings as possible.

SELECTION COMPETENCIES

Key Selection Competencies:

  1. A tertiary qualification, including Cert.IV. TAE or equivalent, with experience teaching in an area of professional expertise relevant to community needeg TESOL or computer skills.
  1. Well developed organizational and coordination skills, with the ability to be flexible and respond to opportunities and constraints as they occur in the remote context.
  1. The ability to involve community members and a range of diverse agency groups in the development and operations of a dynamic Learning Centre while fostering a strong sense of local ownership
  1. An understanding of the VET system, VET delivery and how to broker training courses from Registered Training Organisations (RTO) or other appropriate training organizations.
  1. Significant experience working and / or living in remote Indigenous communities in the Northern Territory
  1. Demonstrated capacity to work effectively and sensitively within the social, political and cultural environments of Indigenous communities and organisations
  1. Strength in working with and mentoring others in a team approach, including the ability to consult, negotiate and achieve positive outcomes.
  1. Ability to use computers, develop and maintain data bases and keep records
  1. Demonstrated understanding of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action principles and practices
  1. Hold a current NT Driver’s Licence and capacity to obtain an Ochre card.

Desirable Selection Competencies:

  1. Warlpiri language skills
  2. High competence in IT skills
