Role Purpose: To partner the senior management within your faculty/ service delivering a professional and proactive approach to support the achievement of the university’s corporate strategy.It is essential that you have the ability to lead on projects and analyse and present accounting information in the relevant format to support stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver a customer focussed and innovative financial management service to customer area.
  • Conduct monthly/ annual financial reviews with budget holders ensuring accurate forecasts throughout the financial year.
  • Manage effective stakeholder relationships for example faculty/ service customers, including internal audit and human resources.
  • Provide information, analysis, support, advice and challenge where appropriate to influence decisions enabling the service/ faculty area to meet business objectives.
  • Ensure credible financial advice is in line with accounting regulations and company/ financial standards.
  • Prepare budgets, including both revenue and capital, for client area liaising proactively with both Senior Management/ Directors to ensure the budget is aligned to business requirements and expenditure.
  • Assist with the preparation of the year end statutory accounts for the University and associated subsidiary companies liaising with External stakeholders to ensure the audit process is efficient and effective.
  • Contribute effectively to working groups offering professional financial advice supporting continuous improvement projects
  • Develop and undertake training to ensure faculties/ service customers have the appropriate levels of financial awareness in line with budget accountability
  • Support the efficiency of the finance department by continuously reviewing standards, working manuals/policy documents finance system and implementing improvements.
  • Carry out any relevant duties as required by the Financial Controller.

Working Relationships:

It will be essential that the post holder establishes and maintains good and effective working relationships with other members of the designated team. Good relationships with all staff and students of the University will also be essential. The postholder will be expected to liaise with external organisations as necessary.

Location:

The post holder will be required to work at any of the University's sites depending on the location of the particular section he/she is supporting. Initially the post holder will be located at the Finance and Planning Department, Sutherland Building, Newcastle upon Tyne.

Attendance Requirements:

The standard working week is 37 hours and a flexible scheme of working hours is in operation.

Skills, Experience and Qualifications
Essential
CCAB qualification or working towards full qualification with operational experience.
Ability to operate a number of accounting, management information systems to critically analyse, interpret and present data appropriately at senior management level.
Operate with a commercial outlook and be capable of providing sound advice on business decisions. Offer support and advice, challenge and influence decision making in line with business objectives.
Ability to manage stakeholder relationships and operate collaboratively.
Resilience and ability to challenge the status quo and focus on continuous improvement initiatives.
Flexible approach to workload and adapting to change.
Desirable
Previous experience of working within or knowledge of the higher education sector and current business challenges.
Recent or current experience of working in a large complex organisation.
