Role: Science Lecturer

Salary: £23.3K - £33,282 per annum

Accountable to: Faculty Area Manager – Access to HE, HE & Employability

Accountable for: To deliver high quality teaching, learning and assessment of a range of science programmes including Access to HE, BTEC and Higher Education.

Portfolio of responsibilities:

·  Carry out teaching and related duties as described in the contract of employment.

·  Contribute to curriculum development and undertake responsibility for the development of specified aspects of curriculum.

·  To develop teaching and learning materials relevant to teaching duties and course team student groups.

·  Undertake pastoral care, personal tutor and tutorial duties as required.

·  To be responsible for assessing, recording and reporting on student development and progress.

·  Participate in and contribute to team and organisational events related to providing advice and guidance.

·  Carry out duties related to the coordination and organisation of learning programmes within your specialist area.

·  To undertake initial guidance and advice interviews with potential students and contribute to the enrolment and induction process.

·  To provide an assessment calendar and track students’ progress and maintain records as required.

·  To complete registration documentation and monitor student attendance and achievement taking appropriate action as required.

·  To contribute to and participate in quality assurance initiatives as appropriate.

·  To review and evaluate lessons/courses within area of responsibility, with a view to continuous improvement.

·  To liaise with parents/carers/employers (where appropriate) including attendance at parents’ evenings.

·  To work with employers and agencies to promote employer engagement on vocational courses, including ad-hoc work placements.

·  To complete Health and Safety risk assessments for all laboratory practicals and off-site trips

·  To uphold and continually develop in line with the Professional Standards for Teachers and other forms of scholarly activity and research.

·  To undertake course co-ordination, which specifically includes:

o  Leading your course team and addressing issues relating to the course for example recruitment, success rates, student attendance, course developments

o  Leading on the quality of course delivery

o  Maintaining the course file and ensuring the internal verification is carried out

o  Ensuring that students are registered, exam entries complete and that results are collated and reported

Qualifications:
1 / Hold a recognised Teaching Qualification e.g. PGCE or Certificate in Education / E / x
2 / Educated to at least Degree level in Biology, Physics or Chemistry / E / x
3 / Hold a minimum Level 2 qualification in Maths and English / E / x
Experience and Skills:
4 / Experience of delivering teaching of chemistry, biology and/or physics/maths qualifications at a range of levels from 2 up to level 5 / E / x / x
5 / Experience and knowledge of teaching on a range of learning programmes e.g. BTEC, Access and HE programmes / D / x / x
6 / Experience and knowledge of a wide variety of teaching / learning strategies / E / x / x
7 / Have the experience and skills to provide pastoral support and guidance support to learners / D / x
8 / Experience of providing structured student tutorials and using a range of academic tracking systems / E / x / x
9 / Experience of developing the curriculum / D / x / x
