Purpose Number (see above) / Activity
1,2,3,5,6 / Chemotherapy SIG Membership Meeting with presentation titled, “Safe Handling of Chemo/Bio/Targeted Therapies and the Concept of Medical Surveillance.” Program well attended and well received.
1,2,3,5,6 / Work with Virtual Community Website … Active Discussion with input from SIG Leadership, as well as membership; Webmaster keeps VC Website updated with purposeful survey questions and current resources … links, etc.
1,3,4,5,6 / Newsletters are current and provide cutting-edge information and discussion for SIG members.
1,3,5 / Communique to members to inform them of opportunity to participate in survey for the ASCO/ONS Chemotherapy Administration Standards, as they were being developed.
1,2 / Chemotherapy SIG Banner at ONS Congress

II. CURRENT SIG PROJECTS:

If funded indicate source of funding.

a. Completed since last annual report – Three newsletters were completed since the last annual report. This is one less that should have been completed. As the Coordinator I take full responsibility for this deficit. I am hopeful that the new leadership will be more efficient at this responsibility that I was.

b. Ongoing projects (please indicate estimated date of completion) – Currently working with the Surgery SIG on presentation for 2010 ONS Congress session titled, “Management of Chemotherapy in the Perioperative Setting.” This has been accepted as a 90 minute session with three speakers. I am confident this session will be excellent!

V. Leadership Succession Planning

This is critical to the future success of the SIG.

a.  Have you identified future leaders within your SIG? Yes No

If so, who?

If not, what is your plan to ensure future SIG leaders?

This will be addressed during our next Conference Call. We do have members who have expressed interest in participating in SIG Activity. We will have extensive “networking” at the 2010 Congress to “glean” potential candidates and I will include an “appeal” in the next SIG Communique, after our March Conference call.

b.  What additional help from the Nominating Committee and/or staff do you require to help in this effort?

We will most likely be able to secure future leaders from within the SIG without need to involve the Nominating Committee. Thanks.

VI. EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES AT CONGRESS, INSTITUTES OF LEARNING, ETC. for 2009:

Number of Congress Submissions: 1

Number Of Institutes of Learning Submissions: 0 – Many Chemo SIG members presented, yet not generated from the Chemotherapy SIG.

Number of Discussion Sessions: None generated from the Chemotherapy SIG at Congress or IOL, however there were several discussion sessions that were represented by members of this SIG. We do have some of the most active discussions on our virtual community website.

Were any joint submissions? Yes with Surgery SIG

Number of SIG-Sponsored sessions, actually presented: 1 at 2009 Congress (SIG Membership Mtg.)

Number of Submissions for other conferences (Please indicate conference name): 0

Year Last Revised: 2009

XIII. PUBLISHED PLANNING MEETING MINUTES (year from last Congress): YES NO

PUBLISHED PLANNING MEETING AGENDA (year prior to last Congress): YES NO

XIV. LIST STRENGTHS OF SIG:

LIST CHALLENGES/WEAKNESSES OF SIG: ONS Leadership has provided a great opportunity for SIG Leadership to prosper and grow. Carol DeMarco and Jenny Shinsky are excellent resources and stable, valuable assets for our SIGs. I believe the weakness in this role has been the current coordiantor. Being able to work full time (which is almost double/triple time) has challenged this coordinator with regard to completing tasks, such as the newsletters, etc. This weakness should not reflect on the wonderufl support offered and provided by ONS, but on the time management of the current coordinator. UGH!

(State how you are addressing these.)

XV. SIG VIRTUAL COMMUNITY – LIST HOW YOU HAVE USED YOUR SITE

We have an extremely active Virtual Community, of which I am extremely proud. Seth Eisenberg is our “Webmaster” and he keeps surveys, current resources on the website and VC Discussion topics viable. Issues reflected in the discussion have been addressed in the newsletters and have been well received. This website is very valuable to ONS and nurses who adminsiter chemotherapy, etc.

XVI. ADDITIONAL: COMMENTS, QUESTIONS, PROBLEMS, AND SOLUTIONS:

I have definitely benefited as coordinator for this special interest group. It has been a pleasure working with Seth Eisenbery and Myra Davis. Michael Smart, our new Coordinator-elect, has some wonderful ideas and is definitely an advocate for this SIG. As past newsletter editor, he knows and understand “the ropes.” Michael will help to continue to develop this SIG. I will continue to provide the annual banner, support, as requested, and hopefully be better able to support articles in the newslettter regarding management of chemotherapy and patient support issues.
