University of Nairobi to mentor Koitaleel Samoei University College

The University of Nairobi will mentor Koitaleel Samoei University College as its constituent college.

The new constituent collegewill be located in Nandi County. The University of Nairobi is expected to offer advice as regards, academic and administrative staff exchanges, academic programs and technical expertise to steer the University College to acquire the status of a fully fledged University and to a world class status, this was revealed by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peter M. F. Mbithi in his office during the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the University of Nairobi and KoitaleelSamoeiManagement in the presence of Nandi Governor Dr.CleophasLagattoday April, 7, 2015.

Among the courses that will be offered include Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws (LLB). The University College will be headed by Principal assisted by two Deputy Principals.

According to the Universities Act, a mentoring institution must agree to mentor a new institution as a requirement for approval of the new institution by Commission For Universities Education, (CUE). The University of Nairobi will mentor the new constituent university to a fully fledged University when they will eventually get a charter. The Commission for University Education carried out a technical inspection of the proposed Koitaleel Samoei University College with a purpose to assess the adequacy and appropriateness of the academic resources. The inspection by CUE also involved the inspection on the physical facilities, human resources, financial resources, library resources, academic programs and student enrolment, the University College Master Plan, and the Strategic Plan.

The establishment of Koitalel Samoei University College is in line with the requirement that there shall be a public university in every county. Secondly, the University will be a stimulus for the achievement of Vision 2030 goals as well as preserve the cultural history of the Nandi people in memory of the legendary leader KoitaleelarapSamoei.

At the moment, the University of Nairobi is mentoringEmbu University College, which has recorded significant improvement since its establishment in 2011. Recently, EUC was awardedISO 9000: 2008 Certification in December 2014 and it launched its Strategic Plan for the Period 2014-2019.

The President of Kenya H. E Uhuru Kenyatta will be laying a foundation stone at Koitaleel Samoei University College in the month of April.

Also present during the signing of the MoU include Prof. Henry Mutoro, Deputy Vice-Chancellor ( Academic Affairs) and acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor ( Administration and Finance), Prof. HorraceOchanda, Deputy Principal, College of Education and External Studies, Prof. Peter Kobonyo, Deputy Principal , College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Others present included Prof. William Ogara, Director, Centre for International Programs and Links,Chief Legal Officer, Ms. Rebecca Ngondo and Mr. JohnsonKinyua, Director (Advancement).
