Mathematical Opportunities for age band 22-36months and 30-50 months

Activities

  • Roles and responsibilities- Pizza chef, pizza packer, waitress/waiter, customer, delivery people (restrict numbers to avoid conflict)
  • Sorting/stacking/ordering small, medium and large pizza boxes
  • Matching pizza to right sized box
  • Sharing pizza between certain number of children- counting children, counting pizza slices
  • Take pizza orders. How many, what size, which type? Record on template or pad
  • Talk about money. How much will they cost? (easier if each Pizza is priced at £1)
  • Write receipts/the bill
  • Talk about time pizza will take to prepare…soon, later, at 8 o clock, after 5 minutes
  • Where is it going to be delivered? Address/door number?

Numbers

  • Selecting and counting required number of objects/items when “making” pizzas, counting money
  • Experimenting with symbols and marks representing ideas of number- on orders, the bill
  • Begins to make comparisons between quantities
  • Use number language and number names accurately in context of role play e.g. how many, too much, enough, more, less
  • Sometimes match number to quantity- e.g. preparing 2 small pizzas as ordered
  • Uses number names accurately in play- Talking about numbers on menus, phone, addresses, orders, money etc
  • Shows an interest in number problems e.g. Are there enough plates for all the customers/boxes for pizzas, which box will the pizza fit in? etc..

Shape, space and Measures

  • Begin to use the language of size and shapes…Round and square pizzas, boxes, triangle slices.
  • Small, medium, large or just big or small
  • Begin to categorise objects according to properties such as shape or size- Sequencing/ordering boxes,
  • Thickness of pizzas- thin base/thick base
  • Begin to use positional language- e.g. pizzas in box, toppings on pizza

Adult Role

Asking open ended questions e.g.

  • Is there enough pizza for everyone to have one slice of pizza each?
  • How many more?
  • Is there too many? Not enough?.…
  • What shape is the slice of pizza?
  • How much does it cost?
  • When will the pizza be ready?

Modelling roles and responsibilities

Playing with the children enthusiastically…. listening and tuning in!
