Essential Tasks:
The Basic Elements of the Visibility Wall:
  • Top of Wall: House, Betters Triangle, Title “ ‘Unit Name’, Daily Visual Management”
  • Beneath this: Headers “Quality”; “Cost”; “Delivery”; “Safety”; “Morale” – these will be the titles for the columns.
  • Along the left side: Headers: “Monthly/Weekly”; “Daily” – the wall will have a section for monthly and weekly data and another for daily data.
  • Under the appropriate QCDSM Header place communication items such as: charts, tables, safety crosses, communication, standard work, etc.
Example:

The Basic Elements of the Wall Walk:(These items need to be determined)
  • A certain person or role that is in charge of leading the wall walk.
  • The wall walk needs to happen consistently at the same time each day.(or several times in the day depending on your unit)
  • There is 15mins for the wall walk – This may vary slightly depending on your team.
  • A checklist of items to cover will help the wall walk run smoothly.
  • When a target is not met or a safety issue occurs, there needs to be discussion with the team regarding what actions will be taken to improve.

Basic Requirements of Charts:
  • Make the chart title clear, descriptive and short
  • Label the x and y axis
  • Include the picture of the “Betters Triangle” that best fits with the measurement.
  • Indicate target met (not met) green (red) circle. The target needs to be visible.
  • Include  or  to indicate desired direction.
Example:

Choosing What to Display on the wall:
  • Think about what you need to improve in your area. What are you working on?
  • What new standard work or work standard does the team need to know about?
  • What do you need to measure to roll-up to the Executive Director’s Wall/ to the Regional Wall?
  • What Hoshin are you connected with? What Provincial outcome/target are you connected with? What can you measure to show that connectivity?

  1. 4.
/ For Reporting: Read the title of the chart being reported on and report for each chart whether the measure is meeting target (green) or is Not meeting target (red)
If Measure is meeting target (green):
  • state that it is ‘on target’
/ If Measure is Not meeting target (red):
  • Have the discussion with staff re: the current problem, root cause, future state and what actions need to be taken
  • Write up a corrective action plan as a communication tool so that all staff can see what is being done to improve the outcomes.
  • post the corrective action plan on the visibility wall behind the chart

  1. 5.
/ Questions to consider when making a Corrective Action Plan:
  • Clarify how the corrective actions you outlined will help you get back on target?
  • When do you expect to get back on target?
  • Who is responsible for the corrective actions?
  • If the corrective actions do not seem to be having the effect you expected, have you considered other options?

If your measures are consistently on target, consider the following:
  • How long has the measure been meeting the target? Is it sustained?
  • Are your targets set appropriately?
  • Are you focused on the right area but need a different measure to communicate more appropriately?
  • Do you need to focus on something else?
