Responsibilities include:

  • leading, managing and supporting their team of subject teachers;
  • ensuring that, with the assistance of colleagues, appropriate schemes of work are produced, to include: Numeracy, Literacy, ESDGC, CwricwlwmCymreig, Citizenship, and other relevant cross-curricular themes, as appropriate to individual subjects;
  • arranging for the sharing of good practice in relation to teaching & learning;
  • with the assistance of colleagues, review and produce an annual self evaluation of subject practice and performance, and including consequent improvements in the Area of Learning development plan;
  • with subject colleagues, establish targets for a three year period, making use of available student data, in conjunction with member of SIT, planning to maintain and improve your subject’s contribution to the School’s CSI at KS1, KS2, KS3, KS4 and L2inc;
  • promoting high quality and good standards of behaviour, commitment and achievement throughout the area as a whole, making use of available student data;
  • rewarding good student behaviour and progress in learning by suitable use of subject/school award schemes and deterring poor behaviour by operating suitable school sanctions;
  • ensuring that incident reports are completed and other information passed on to appropriate staff as required;
  • arranging a clear and effective structure of subject responsibilities and tasks;
  • ensuring that assessment, recording and reporting procedures take place according to schedule, conforms with school policy and makes use of available student data;
  • convening meetings of the Area of Learning as required and within the agreed schedule;
  • organising and monitoring performance management arrangements throughout the area to improve teaching, learning and student achievement;
  • identifying INSET provision for the subject area as a whole and for individual members which is cost-effective and focused on subject need;
  • allocating teachers and students to groups to ensure the best quality teaching, learning and performance;
  • arrange the programme for Initial Teacher Training students, and the induction of teachers new to the subject area;
  • creating and maintaining a suitable learning environment in subject accommodation, monitoring its condition and reporting defects;
  • ensuring that students are entered correctly for examinations;
  • maintaining accurate records of subject equipment and other resources, reporting damage or loss making provision for repair or replacement;
  • ensuring Health and Safety requirements are met throughout the subject area and reporting hazards and accidents;
  • ensuring that suitable work is set during the absence of a colleague;
  • making other arrangements specific to the area as required;
  • attending scheduled meetings and advising the Strategic Improvement Team as required;
  • carrying out other specific duties which may reasonably be assigned by the Headteacher.
