Title: Consultant Educator
Morris-Jumel Mansion:As Manhattan’s oldest residence, the Morris-Jumel Mansion Museum presents American life from the colonial era to the present by preserving, collecting, and interpreting history, culture, and the arts to engage and inspire diverse audiences.Built in 1765 by British officer Roger Morris, the house was later inhabited by George Washington during the Battle of Harlem Heights in 1776 and the Jumel family from 1810 to 1865. School Programs: Our School Programs compliment teachers’ classroom lessons and engage students in the process of inquiry with educational programs that are aligned with recognized learning standards. All programs are carefully adapted for special needs. School students become critical thinkers by participating in engaging 90 minute sessions inspired by Morris-Jumel Mansion’s history, American history and artifacts found within the museum.
Role: Morris-Jumel Mansion is looking for consultant educators who are interested in teaching school and adult tours as well as facilitating public programs throughout the year.

Training Commitment:Consultant educator applicants are required to complete:

Training sessions with senior Education staff focusing on tour techniques, group management, the history of Morris-Jumel Mansion, and the decorative arts of the Colonial and Federal period.

Three observations of experienced docent/educator tours.

Two successful practice tours observed by senior Education staff.

Tour Commitment: After successful completion of training, educators will need to have a flexible schedule to lead school and/or adult tours during the week and sometimes on weekends. A commitment of at least 2 tours, or 3 hours a week, is required.

Responsibilities: Per Diem Educators are expected to:

Arrive promptly for tours

Set-up and put away any materials that are needed for a specific program

Collect admission fees from tour groups when needed

Provide tours to school and adult groups

Assist in gift shop sales for school groups when needed

Attend events and enrichment programs as their schedule permits

Payment and Schedule: $25-$50 per program depending on program bookings. Availability needs to be flexible but preferably mornings, Monday through Friday; additional work may be scheduled in the late afternoons, evenings, or on weekends. Program delivery typically takes place between 10am and 1pm daily. This position is subject to seasonal changes in volume of classes and programs delivered. Commitment though the 2015-2016 academic year is required.

Requirements

Interest in American History and Arts

Comfortable speaking in public

Knowledge of inquiry-based teaching
Previous experience with children a plus
Bilingual with Spanish a plus
