ROCKETS BOY’S BASKETBALL PLAYER HANDBOOK

Behavior

All players are expected to do the right thing at all times. Participation in athletics is a privilege, not a right. Making good decisions all the time is a very important aspect of a student athlete’s life both on and off the court. Players need to represent their family, school, and team in a respectful matter, which includes social media. Social media avenues shall not be used in any negative way towards teammates, the program, the school, and opponents. Any such instances that may occur will be handled on a case by case basis. Hazing, bullying, or any other harassing behavior is strictly prohibited. Any instance of any of these behaviors should be reported immediately. All school policies, student athletic handbook policies, IHSA policies, and law enforcement policy will be enforced when dealing with any student athlete behavior issues.

Transportation

All student athletes are expected to travel with the team to away games on the bus both to the game and home. If a student athlete cannot ride the bus home due to an extenuating circumstance, a parent/guardian note should be brought to the athletic office for documentation before the trip occurs. When going to a game discussion between players about that opponent is the only appropriate discussion that should take place. The atmosphere of the bus ride on the way home will depend on how we play. We will always leave the bus cleaner than it was when we got on it.

Locks, Lockers, & Locker Room

All players will be given a lock and a locker that is separate from their school and PE locker. All basketball items should be stored and locked in their locker. Never leave anything unlocked and unattended in the locker room. Burlington Central High School is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Use of a cell phone or other electronic devices with a camera feature is prohibited at all times. School policy, student athletic handbook policy, and law enforcement policy applies.

Injuries

A certified trainer is present at Burlington Central High School every day from 2:30 until the last practice or game contest is done on that evening or weekend. All athletes should discuss injuries and potential injuries with the athletic trainer. Any injury or potential injury should be discussed immediately with the player’s coach when it happens.

Clothing

Each athlete will be issued a practice jersey and game jersey. Each player is expected to wear their practice jersey at every practice. Both the practice jersey and game jersey should be taken care of appropriately and washed routinely. Both items need to be returned at the end of the season in the same condition that they were handed out in. Failure to do so would result in a fee in order to pay for a replacement game or practice jersey. On game days, the team and coaches at each level will decide on game day wear. Varsity basketball players are required to wear their travel suits to all games.

Games & Practices

Player attendance at ALL games and practices is mandatory. If a player misses a game or practice it will be up to the coach’s discretion as to what occurs. Each instance will be handled on a case by case basis. Practice time listed is when practice on the court actively begins. “Early is on time, on time is late.” If a player is late to practice it will be the coach’s discretion as to what occurs and each instance will be handled on a case by case basis. Under levels will be bussed to elementary schools for practice. They should be picked up on time from those facilities. Varsity practice may start before or go after the scheduled time in order to get film, scouting report, x’s and o’s, and team meetings takencare of before or after our on the court time. Please pick up your athlete on time when coming home from away games.

Communication

Each player will try to become an effective verbal and non-verbal communicator on the basketball court. We will also be trying to help each player become a better communicator with their peers, teachers, administrators, parents, adults, etc. Coach’s will communicate roles to each individual player. Roles can change for a variety of reasons like player game performance, eligibility, player practice performance, game and practice performance of other teammates, illness/injury. It is important that players understand their role and understand how their role may change throughout the season. The coach makes decisions with the team’s best interest in mind. Player’s should talk to their level coach first about any issues pertaining to their role. If any additional meeting is required it will be set up with the coach, head coach, athletic director and parent. Playing time, strategy, and other players in the program will not be discussed during this meeting. If a player is not in attendance or school, late to practice or a family emergency occurs, that player should email their coach and call their coach by school phone in order to ensure that they receive the message.
