Principal’s Message

With November now approaching many wonderful things come to mind. Our students are now settled into their classrooms and our teachers are undertaking a variety of assessments in order to promote student learning. Our students are showing growth in terms of demonstrating strong character and powerful thinking and when I visit our classrooms each day I notice students making strong decisions and demonstrating powerful listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. I continue to be impressed with the hard work and dedication both by our staff and our parents that takes place each day in our building. It is also with a sense of sadness and great pride as I prepare to leave such an incredible learning community. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Vedder Elementary and it has been an honour to work with such an amazing group of students, staff and parents. Thank you all for your tremendous support and encouragement and for your contributions in making Vedder such a magnificent place of learning.

Uninterrupted time

In order to further our excellent learning environment, we have implemented uninterrupted teaching time between 8:30 and 11:50 every day.

Student Absences

Parents, please call the school at 604-858-4759 to inform us if your son or daughter will be late or absent. We have an answering machine that is checked each morning. Thanks for helping us with this!

Remembrance Day Assembly

Our Remembrance Day Assembly will take place on Friday, November 7that 10:30 in our gym. We would like to invite parents, grandparents and relatives to join us on this day to remember the sacrifices made by the men and women in our armed forces. We will be distributing poppies to our students on Thursday. Donations for poppies can be made at the office and all contributions will go toward the veterans in Chilliwack.

Intramurals

At lunchtime, we have a variety of teams playing skittle ball, which is a variation of dodge ball where students try to knock down targets instead of aiming at each other. Thank you to Mr. Fast and Mr. Wojcik who are making our Intramural program such a success!

Bus Loop

Parents, in order to ensure that our students are dropped off safely, please use the drop off lane in front of the school instead of using the lane between the buses and the parked cars. Thanks for your cooperation in this matter.

Student Celebration Assemblies

Our next Student Celebration Assemblies will take place on Friday, November 28th.We will be recognizing the accomplishments of individual primary and intermediate students. Notices will be sent home indicating which students will be celebrated for their outstanding accomplishments.

Aboriginal Presentation

On Friday November 14th a number of students from grades’ 2-6 will be attending GWG to view ‘Raven Meets Monkey King.’ The big idea is that the value of money pales in comparison to the values of family and history.

Cross Country Team

Our Cross Country Team had many dedicated runners who were able to join us for practices but weren't able to make it to the meets. I want to thank everyone who came out and ran this fall. We look forward to the Cultus Lake run in the spring!

Here are the boys and girls who attended our District Cross Country running event:

Sydney Ma, Gunner Ma, Marley Allanson, Emma Hildebrand, Jenna Gardner.

Congratulations to all our Cross Country Runners! Thank you Mrs. Shea for being our cross-country coach!

Perfect Attendance

Congratulations to Cruz Potter, Nolan Krys and Sarah Maycock for having perfect attendance in October! These students will be having lunch with Mr. Ferris in the near future.

Homework Club

Our Aboriginal EA, Mrs. Surmon is running a homework club on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 2:00 to 2:40. Please contact either the office or Mrs. Surman for more information.

Library News

Once again our Book Fair was a huge success thanks to all of the support from students, their families and our Vedder staff. All of the money raised will be put towards new literacy resources. A big thank youto my fabulous volunteer moms: Mrs. Ma, Mrs. O’Donnell, Mrs. Maycock, Mrs. Kerrigan, Mrs. Lacroix, Mrs. Thiessen, Mrs. Dent Mrs. Guard. I apologize if I have forgotten a volunteer or two as it was a very hectic week in the library. We managed to raise over $3000.00 that will help us to enhance our resource collection. Great job everyone!

Please keep track of your child's nightly reading by checking off once per night in their yellow "Vedder Reading Log" book. Please return the WHOLE BOOK when they have completed 50 nights so they can be credited for their reading. The 50th night of reading will be November 10 so reading logs can be sent to the library any time after that, as your child reaches 50 nights.

A few books have been returned with severe water and food damage, resulting in bills being sent home if the book is needing to be replaced. For $1 you can purchase a special two-layered plastic drawstring bag designed to protect books in backpacks. If your child has already purchased one, please encourage them to use it regularly.
