January 23Social Media Training Workshop- run by our own Bob Cassidy!

January 29Kevin and Pete will introduce our ESSEX student from France

President Pete’s Rotary Moment: Pete reflected on the family aspect of Rotary today – family as first priority and family as in – we in Rotary are a family. Member Mark Flanzbaum has asked for an extension of his leave for family medical reasons and also appreciated our offers of support. His wife Debbie is undergoing a prolonged and difficult recovery. Our thoughts are with both of them; we hope for Debbie’s continued progress and look forward to Mark’s return.

In related news…..Joe Sylva’s mom is scheduled for hip placement surgery next Tuesday and we will keep her in our thoughts for a safe and successful surgery.

Member Milestones: January is a birthday laden month, to wit:

Steve McD celebrates a birthday on January 14

Victor and Mark C. celebrate birthdays on January 16

Bob Cassidy celebrates a birthday on January 18

Diana celebrates her one-year membership anniversary on January 17.

Guests: Today we welcomed Capt. Devon Messecar, who will be inducted into the club on February 5. We also welcomed Maureen Sullivan who will have a fireside chat very soon!

Social Media Training Workshop – Good for Rotary, good for your business, good for you. Our own Bob Cassidy is the chair of the District PR committee – he knows the value of this training and he’s running the show - and hopes to see you there! It’s at the Sheraton Framingham on January 23 from 6:00-9:00 PM. You can register online on the District Website:

Pay It Forward Day: President Pete re-introduced the Pay It Forward committee (Diana, Linda, Susanna and himself) and the club got more of an idea of what this will be about. RI president Sakuji Tanaka has asked each club to offer a Peace Through Service event, and PIF Day is our take on that idea. Our club will promote, working with the schools and other town organizations, a day in which random acts of kindness are put into action and celebrated. There will be a launch event on Saturday, April 6 and a culminating capstone event on Thursday, April 25 (that’s the official global “Pay It Forward Day”). Pete passed out Pay It Forward bracelets to everyone and Christine explained the proper use: when you do a kindness for someone else, should they thank you – you take your PIF band off and offer it to them with a suggestion that they pay the kindness forward to someone else.

PIF has a projected budget of $4,000 and we will be seeking sponsorships. Several club members have already offered to be sponsors. Stay tuned for more details – and let anyone on the committee know if you’d like to part of making this happen.

Program: Ralph gave a great overview of the new Trails network in Bedford. Ralph has long been an impassioned advocate and steward of Bedford’s natural environment along with physical fitness and health. He’s been involved with the town Trails committee, the River Stewards Committee, and the Transportation Advisory Committee, among other committees. One idea being developed is that Bedford students moving onto their next school may participate in a “Rite of Passage” walk, in which they will walk from one school (say, Davis) to the next school they’ll be attending (Lane), via the trails. What a great tradition that will be.

There are two loop trails that have been identified and made possible by easements and agreement. They offer beautiful and interesting walks and promote physical fitness. The inner loop trail is 6.1 miles long and 70% of it is ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compatible, and the outer one is 22.5 miles. We heard a remarkable list of sights to see, including woodland bridges, a Frank Lloyd Wright house, a Walter Gropius house, a drumlin, and eskers. AND a 180’ beaver dam! Time to go walking!

Raffles and Happy Dollars:

Kevin won the door prize and guest Maureen Sullivan had the 50/50 ticket – but drew the wrong king.

Upcoming raffle prize donors, more or less, are: Pete, Ralph, Jim.

In Happy Dollars, Jessica was happy that the Patriots will play the Ravens, Kevin was up-to-date with Social Media and said he was in touch via Facebook with the Egyptian Rotarians he met while being a GSE leader; Nat was glad for “ongoing Rotary things”, Lynne was glad to be and glad for incoming member Devon and for Maureen Sullivan’s presence; Bill was happy for his grandmother who turns 90 this month; Bob C. countered with happiness for his dad who will be 99, Jacquelin saw the movie Pay It Forward after Pete’s impassioned description of it; Steve McD was glad for Devon and Maureen; visiting Maureen quipped that she didn’t join 15 years ago when invited because it was “too backward” and she’s happy to see so many women in the club; Bob M. was happy for the Patriots’ win; Steve T. was happy to be here, Susanna was glad her dog hasn’t bitten anyone yet; Cliff was happy he’ll be in Florida this week for soccer tournaments and was glad that it’s Girl Scout Cookie time; Victor was wicked happy that our club is growing at a time when service organizations are suffering declines; Ralph and Jean got a new cat and he can’t remember its name; Britton was happy for “the ageless Rotarians”; Mark C. was happy to be here and for his birthday; Pete was glad for ski season starting and was congratulatory to Steve T. for his continuing progress on his journey to health and fitness.
