Imran Vlog Helpful apps to download onto Apple devices Transcript

Imran

Hi there. My name’s Imran, and I am part of the Online Today team, working with RNIB. I’ve been registered blind for three years now and I have glaucoma.

The apps that you can download onto Apple devices have really helped me in my everyday life. With apps, you can get around more, you can read books, and you can magnify things in the supermarket or when you’re out and about.

So one app I find really useful is called ‘MagX’. Now with this app, you can hold up your device and you can magnify into what’s in front of you. So I’m going to demonstrate that now. I have a cookery book here, so I’m going to open it up onto the right page. So I’m going to tap on the ‘MagX’ app, I’m going to hold the iPad over the page, and in the bottom right-hand corner there is an icon with a picture of a magnifying glass. So I’m going to tap on the magnifying glass, which is in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. When we tap this icon, the page of the book is getting bigger and bigger, until it’s magnified to quite a scary level, so there’s only a couple of words on the screen.

The next app I’m going to show you is called ‘Overdrive’. Now this is for talking books. It’s great for me, because I’m registered blind, so I’m able to receive free talking books from RNIB. Audio books are paper-based books but they’re actually delivered in an audio format, and it’s great because you can download them to any smart device. So the audio book we’re going to listen to today is one by J K Rowling – it’s a Harry Potter book. So I’m going to turn that on there. So I’m going to open the ‘Overdrive’ app and I’m going to tap on the book that I want to listen to. So now it’s reading ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’, read by Stephen Fry, no less.

A great app that helps me when I’m out and about is called ‘Bus Checker’. So I’m going to tap on the ‘Bus Checker’ app, and now we have a list of all the bus stops that are near my location. So now I’m going to select the bus stop that I need. And now it displays all the bus numbers that stop at that bus stop. So if I choose the bus that I’m looking for, it has a list of all the stops that that bus will stop at.

If you’d like to learn more about technology, the Online Today team is here to help. Me and my colleagues would love to see you at one of our sessions, or if you’d like a home visit, our team of volunteers are on hand to come and visit you in your home.
