STROKES, STARTS & CHANGEOVERS
All swimming should be under ASA laws. Lifesaving strokesand towing techniques can be found in all current edition of the RLSS UK manual. However, the RLSS UK manual does not provide a full enough definition for the purposes of competition. Therefore the following should be noted.
STROKES
Sidestroke Only the scissor kicking action should be used (top leg forward over bottom leg) both hands must remain in the water at all times, eg NOT front crawl arms.
X-Chest TowOnly the scissor kicking action should be used. The casualty must be on top of the rescuer’s hip at all times.
Extended Arm TowEither scissor kick or lifesaving backstroke may be used.
Torpedo BuoyAny stoke may be used. The buoy must be worn correctly with the loop acrossthe shoulder. Assuming the rescue tube was donned correctly, there is no cause for disqualification if the loop falls down on to the Competitors arm or elbow during the Competitors approach or tow.
FIS ManikinThe intention is to simulate a lifesaving operation, therefore, the attitude of the lifesaver must be to such that he is intentionally willing to keep the face of the manikin out of the water. The speed of the tow is important. The manikin must be towed, not pushed . The manikin should be towed face up at the surface, with one hand always in contact the manikin. The manikin shall not be carried by the throat, mouth, nose or eyes. The Competitor is not allowed to release the manikin until the end of the pool has been touched. The manikins face must be carried on an angle, but not more than 90 degrees from the horizontal plane of the surface.
STARTSThe ASA format starts shall be used (one start rule)All Competitors who start (i.e. a starting motion ) before the start signal has been given shall be disqualified.
