Course Description: Intro Spanish is a semester program. Successful completion of Intro Spanish is suggested to enter Spanish I. The course is intended to introduce students to language learning by teaching them: Spanish culture, greetings, cognates, the alphabet, nouns & gender, definite articles, plurals, classroom objects, numbers, classroom commands, the body parts, days of the week, months, seasons, dates, weather, time, colors, subject pronouns, regular verbs: AR,ER,IR, ser & estar, adjectives, the family, and food.

Benefits of Being Bilingual: Learning a second language at an early age has a positive effect on intellectual growth. Enriches and enhances student’s mental development; leaves students with more flexibility in thinking, greater sensitivity to language and a better ear for listening. It also improves students understanding of his/her native language and gives them the ability to communicate with people he/she would otherwise not have the chance to know. Opens the door to other cultures and helps a person to understand and appreciate people from other countries as well. Gives students a head start in language requirements for college and increases job opportunities in many careers where knowing another language is a real asset.

Class Outline: The class will meet every day for fifty-four minutes, except on Thursday for thirty-nine minutes. The course will include but not limited to: warm-up exercise, lecture/presentation, group activities, workbook assignments, listening comprehension activities, dialogues, projects, presentations, and tests/quizzes.

Grading Policy: Each semester is divided into three six-week increments. A report card will be issued at the end of each six-week period. A progress report will be issued each three weeks through advisement classes. Any student receiving 70 or below will receive a detailed progress report. Nine-week grading is determined as follows:

Summative evaluation (exams, projects, and oral presentations) - 50 %

Formative evaluation (listening comprehension activities, dialogues, quizzes,…) – 50 %

Homework: I am a firm believer that language is acquired through hands-on. Students will be given the opportunity to do worksheets in class as daily work. Homework will usually consist of reviewing for quizzes, practicing vocabulary, preparation of class projects or daily work that was not completed in class.

Projects: Projects due dates will be given in advance; one day late maximum grade student can receive is a 75; two days late maximum grade 50; three days late 0.

Supply List: bring the supplies list within the first week of school.

  • ½ or 1 inch binder
  • Notebook paper
  • Pencil and/or pen
  • 1 box of Kleenex
  • Dry eraser markers

Late Work Policy: If a student is absent, it is his/her responsibility to make-up the work that they missed. Work should be submitted upon returning to class. If the absence is lengthy, the student will have the amount of days they were absent to make-up the work.

Conferences: Parent/teacher conferences are set up in advance to ensure that there are no scheduling conflicts.

Tutoring: Sometimes a student may need additional help due to difficulty with the material or the need for additional practice. I am available Tuesday after school and Wednesday before school. Please make sure that you make an appointment with me first to ensure that I have no other obligations.
