- Playing area checked for obstacles and hazards - removed or adequate playing area found.

- Ensure there is enough space for the pupils to work in safely, with clear runoff areas.

- Teacher has knowledge of the class abilities and plans tasks accordingly.
- Non contact rugby at primary level.
- Poor technique used in passing, tackling, offensive and defensive play
- Teacher has good knowledge of activity techniques and appropriate teaching styles and progressions.Teacher to monitor pupil’stechnique and provide feedback.If teaching contact rugby teacher must have attended Rugby Ready Course and recommended Scrum Ready.
- Lift/moving equipment
- Both Teacher and pupils aware of how to lift/move equipment using the correct technique and securing the equipment
- Collision with another pupil
- Teacher to ensure the area is large enough for the activity and an appropriate ratio used for lesson and good classroom management group/activity.
- Students not warmed up appropriately
- Warm up and cool down to match the age, experience of group and activity.
- Being struck by hard implement or ball
- Ensure sufficient space between students and remind pupils to remain focused.
- Hockey sticks should be kept below waist height, softer balls recommended for hard surfaces.
- Goal keepers suitably protected according to relevant NGB
- Inappropriate use of equipment or broken damaged equipment.
- Equipment visually checked by teacher at the start of the lesson. Differentiated equipment used to match the needs of the group.
- Rugby Goal posts appropriately padded. Corner posts flexible and suitable height. Free standing goals weighted down and secure.
- Equipment should be stored safely and securely.
The Group /
- Wearing inappropriate clothing
- Clothing must be safe and comfortable. Personal Protective equipment such as shin pads is recommended in Hockey and football. Gum guards are recommended for Hockey and rugby Follow NGB guidance.
- Mixed gendered group
- Primary level mixed gendered activities appropriate although consider size/strength and ability of students.
- Football mix gendered matches are appropriate up to and including yr 10 although consideration of ability, experience, confidence of pupils is key.
- Mixed gender rugby competition is not considered suitable at secondary level
- Wearing Inappropriate footwear
- Students should be wearing footwear suitable for the activity. If studs are worn then they should not have sharp jagged edges. Careful thought needs to be given if different students are wear a mixture of footwear
- Jewellery and personal adornments
- Jewellery and personal adornments should be removed or made safe
- Long Hair not tied up. Long finger nails
- Long hair needs to be tied back. Long finger nails should be trimmed especially for Netball and Basketball.
- Special educational needs/ behaviour needs / medical conditions/EAL
- Teacher and support staff aware of the additional needs of the group and plan/deliver the lesson accordingly
- Teacher to ensure necessary medical equipment present e.g. inhalers/epi pens.
- Appropriate teacher/pupil ratio and adequate supervision.
