Dairy Herdsperson Position

Dwi-Bet Farms is a 1,200 acre dairy farm located in Addison, NY. The herd consists of 500 milking cows and about 400 heifers. Calves are raised on site in a group housed, free choice milk system until weaning. They are then sent to a custom heifer raiser until a month pre-calving. Cows are housed in 2 freestall barns and milked in a double 8 herringbone parlor.

At Dwi-Bet Farms top quality cow care and attention to detail are of utmost importance. We are looking for a dedicated person to join our team and be responsible for calf feeding and cow care. Duties and responsibilities are listed below.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  1. Daily calf feeding in group housed calf system
  2. Attention to detail and cleanliness are important
  1. Fresh cow care and health
  2. Ensure all cows get off to a good start
  3. Observe cows daily and identify sick cows
  4. Consult with herd owner of sick cows and treat accordingly
  5. Monitor milk quality and antibiotic residues
  1. Newborn Calf Care
  2. Develop and implement calving protocols
  3. Ensure timely colostrum administration
  4. Administer vaccines
  1. Overall cow heath
  2. Observe cattle health at all times
  3. Identify sick or lame cows and determine treatment plan with herd owner
  4. Monitor mastitis and culture cows when necessary
  1. Reproduction and Vaccination Program Oversight
  2. Administer reproduction shot program
  3. Administer calf and cow vaccinations
  4. Monitor pregnancies via blood sampling
  5. Visual heat detection daily
  1. Other duties pertaining to herd health as assigned by herd owners

Skills required:

  1. Patience and care when working with calves and cows
  1. Ability to identify and treat “sick” cows
  1. Attention to detail and follow-up in areas such as treatments, reproductive management programs, vaccination programs, hoof health programs, etc.
  1. Ability to utilize Dairy Comp 305 for both day-to-day management (list generation, treatment entry, cow event entry, etc.) in conjunction with ability to analyze DC 305 data/information for management evaluation and decision making, daily monitoring of herd production performance
  1. Ability to interact and work with herd owner, other farm employees and off-farm professionals to accomplish in a team concept the duties and responsibilities as stated above

Skills preferred:

  1. Development of protocols in needed areas
  1. Basic Spanish communication skills and willingness to increase knowledge and abilities in the area
  1. Willingness to participate in continuing education programs to further job skills and contributions to the farm operation
  1. 2 or 4 year Ag. Degree in addition to 2 years of animal husbandry experience
  1. Basic proficiency in spreadsheet programs such as Microsoft Excel

Hours and Salary:

  1. 60-65 Hours per week. Monday-Friday and one weekend day (1/2 day)
  1. Salary to be determined based on experience
