Letter Writing Campaign

6 Steps to a Successful Letter Writing Campaign…

One of the most effective and easiest ways to raise money for the Walk to Cure Diabetes is to launch a letter writing campaign. By simply drafting a “dear family & friends” letter explaining why you, your company, and/or family are participating in the JDRF Walk, you can reach your largest audience! And it can be your ticket to fundraising success as the average letter writing campaign raises $1,500!

Step 1 – Develop Your Mailing List

Before you send your letter out, you need to determine who you will send it to. Remember, the larger your distribution list, the larger your results.

Start with lists you already have such as your address book, rolodex, holiday card list, team rosters, and church or club directories. Don’t forget the people from your past such as classmates, roommates, or teachers. Then add the business you frequent, business colleagues, and families of your children’s schoolmates.

Step 2 – Write Your Letter

Include your find-raising goal ♦ Enclose a self-addressed envelope with each letter stamped (if possible) ♦ Include a deadline for donations (before June 9th)♦ Suggest a donation level ♦ Speak from the heart and tell people why it’s important to you that a cure is found♦ State that their donation is tax-deductable and that checks should be made to JDRF ♦ Follow each letter with a phone call

Helpful Letter Writing Tips:

  • Print a photo of your child or photo of your family on the letter.
  • If your child has just been diagnosed, describe what your family experienced during that time.
  • Discuss your child’s daily routine.
  • Explain concerns about potential complications your child may experience
  • Remember, the most effective letter will come directly from your heart, so don’t weigh it down with too many statistics. Your personal testimony will have the greatest impact on your reader and raise the most money.

Step 3 – Mail Your Letter

Right now is a great time to mail your letter because as we grow closer to the Walk, people get more excited about fundraising! Some of our most successful walk teams raise funds one month out from the Walk!

Step 4 – Collect the Money

Step 5 – Turn Your Money in on Walk Day or Mail it to the JDRF Office
