The Principal’s Post

What an exciting start we have had to our school year! Our numbers have grown this year and we have many new families joining our Ruth Hill community! My desire is that everyone feels welcome and supported as we work together for the academic success of each student!

Besides new faces at Ruth Hill, several new programs are in place that I believe will make a powerful impact on our students’ learning. Teachers have been actively notifying parents of these different instructional strategies, but if you ever have questions, please feel free to talk with your child’s teacher, your Assistant Principal, your Counselor, or myself.

CAFÉ and Daily 5 is a schoolwide organizational focus on reading strategies. Your student will be learning strategies such as Check for Understanding or Voracious Reading. Your student will practice Reading to Self, Reading to Someone, and individually conferencing with the teacher using Good Fit Books. Ask your student what EEKK means!

Spelling has a new look this year as well. Each grade level looks slightly different, but you may see a progression similar to this. At the beginning of the year, the students may be given a list of words to work on that matches a phonics skill. In a few weeks, the list may get longer, so the students won’t know exactly which words will be used for the spelling test. In time, students will come to understand that spelling requires them to use all of the phonics skills they have learned as they help come up with the words that might show up on the spelling test. If you have questions about spelling at a particular grade level, please ask your child’s teacher.

BYOT or BYOD (Bring Your Own Technology/Device) is a new program being piloted in two classrooms at Ruth Hill. Mrs. Moore’s 5th grade Math classes and Mrs. Judy’s homeroom are going through specialize training that will allow those students to bring a device from home that will connect to our internet to enhance their learning through technology. We look forward to expanding this opportunity in the future to more students.

Thank you so much for your support of the staff at Ruth Hill as we strive to model our mission statement so that it becomes a lifelong passion for students. RHES: Realizing High Expectations for All Students!

Computer Captions

We are excited to remind you about an online learning tool that is available for our students this year! The IXL Math program is web based and can be accessed from any computer which is connected to the Internet.IXL is a comprehensive math practice site with an unlimited number of math practice questions in hundreds of skills — all of which are aligned to state standards. One of the best things about IXL is that your child can access it from home, so you have a chance to see your child's progress!

Just follow these easy steps to help your child access this program from your home computer:

1.Go to

2.Enter your child's lunch number for the username and the password.

3.Click Sign in

4.Navigate to your child's grade level.

5.Select a skill that your child needs to practice. (You can place your mouse over any skill to see a sample question and click on the link to begin.)

In addition to making math practice exciting, IXL is designed to help your child learn at his or her own pace. The website is adaptive and will adjust to your child's demonstrated ability level. The site also saves all of your child's results, so you can monitor your child's progress anytime by clicking on the Reports tab. Please encourage your son or daughter to use IXL Math often and help make learning math fun!

There is still room in our afterschool program! The cost is $9 per day if paid in advance and $12 per day if not paid in advance. Hours are 2:30-6:00. The students have lots of fun and free play in a safe environment as well as allotted time for homework. Please see Barbara Newsome in the cafeteria 1:00-6:00 or call 770-254-2899 for more information.

National School Bus Safety Week

October 22-26, 2012

National School Bus Safety Week is an active and evolving public education program designed to promote school bus safety. This annual event is held during the third week in October each year. National School Bus Safety Week is an excellent way for everyone – parents, students, teachers, motorists, school bus operators, school administrators, and other interested parties – to join forces and address the importance of school bus safety. Listed below are a few reminders for us during National School Bus Safety Week:

Students riding a school bus should always:

Arrive at the bus stop five minutes early.

Stand at least 5 giant steps (10 feet) away from the edge of the road.

If something falls under or near the bus, tell the driver. NEVER try to pick it up yourself.

Wait until the bus stops, the door opens, and the driver says it’s okay before stepping onto the bus.

Be careful that clothing with drawstrings and book bags with straps or dangling objects do not get caught in the handrail or door when exiting the bus.

Stay in your seat and sit quietly so that the driver is not distracted.

Check both ways for cars before stepping off the bus.

Crossing students should:

Walk in front of the bus, never walk behind the bus.

Walk on the sidewalk or along the side of the road to a point at lest 10 giant steps ahead of the bus.

When you get on or off the bus, look left, right, left before you enter or cross the street.

Be sure the bus driver can see them, and they can see the bus driver.

Wait for the driver’s signal to cross.

Things parents should know about school bus safety:

The most dangerous part of the school bus ride is getting on and off the bus. The loading and unloading area is called the “Danger Zone”.

The “Danger Zone” is the area on all sides of the bus where children are in the most danger of not being seen by the driver (ten feet in front of the bus where the driver may be too high to see a child, ten feet on either side of the bus where a child may be in the driver’s blind spot, and the area behind the bus).

CCSS Grow & Learn Family Enrichment Program

Our Vision: All children will learn, grow and develop to realize their full potential.

Our Mission: To provide the information, support and encouragement parents need to help their children develop optimally during the crucial early years of life.

Ruth Hill Elementary School continues our Pre-Schooler program funded by United Way. The Coweta County Schools Grow and Learn Family Enrichment Program is here to serve families with children from 0-5 years, primarily focusing on ages 3-5 to prepare pre-school age children for kindergarten. The program is facilitated by a certified Parent Educator. The Parent Educator’s role is to partner with families and facilitate a learning and productive environment. The parent educator will reflect on how we can grow together to build a bridge between home and school. Our program is here to serve you by building communities, strengthening families, promoting school readiness, and providing resources. The program realizes that parents are the child’s first teacher, and the home is the first classroom. This program and services are provided at no cost. The CCSS Grow and Learn Family Enrichment program provides personal visits, developmental screenings, lending libraries for parents and children, group meetings, and resource networks. As an incentive for every family that we enroll and serve, we assist with enrollment into the Ferst Foundation for Childhood Literacy program. This foundation provides a new book by mail monthly to every pre-school age child enrolled in the program to prepare them for reading and learning success. For more information about this incentive you can visit At this time we are recruiting and enrolling families! For more information about the program contact Mrs. Glenetta/Parent Educator at
770-254-2895 ext. 220.

FOR THE SAFETY OF OUR STUDENTS!!!

Parents, please remember that students should never be dropped off from the parking lot and allowed to cross the crosswalk without you being with them. We do not have enough staff to assist with this since they are working the car rider line. Allowing your child(ren) to leave your car and come to the crosswalk alone, puts them in harms way. Our first preference is:
PLEASE DROP STUDENTS THROUGH THE CAR RIDER LINE, so we can account for their safety. If you do decide to enter the parking lot, following these steps will help us greatly!

Please park your car in a parking space.

Please escort your student(s) across the crosswalk.

Then carefully return to your car watching out for cars that are ready to move forward.

AND… Never drop your students at the bus entrance. Thank you!

Special Thanks to the Newnan Optimist Club!

This special organization supported Ruth Hill this year by funding our purchase of Daily 6 Traits Writing Activities. This teacher curriculum will be utilized in Grades 1 – 5, helping students focus on the specific traits of writing. This is a designated area of school improvement for us in our 2012-2013 School Improvement Plan. We appreciate the assistance that the Newnan Optimist Club provided!
