SAFETY OPERATING PROCEDURES

Drill Press

DO NOT use this equipment unless a teacher has instructed you in the safe use and operation

SAFETY EQUIPMENT TO BE WORN

1.  Approved Safety Glasses must be worn at all times while using this equipment

2.  Sturdy footwear to be worn at all times

3.  Close fitting protective clothing must fully cover arms, torso and legs

4.  Long and loose hair MUST be contained

5.  Rings, watches and jewellery must NOT be worn

6.  Tape over medic alert bracelets

7.  Hearing protection is required to be used when performing grinding operations.

PRE-OPERATIONAL SAFETY CHECKS

Before using, ask for permission and discuss with your teacher the HAZARDS and METHOD for your drilling task

1.  Check the area around the drill press to ensure easy access and exit

2.  Locate and check the operation of the emergency stop.

3.  Check that the guards are in position before drilling

4.  Follow the correct clamping procedures – check that the work piece is secure.

5.  If the job obstructs the clearway erect a barricade.

6.  Ensure that the keys is removed from the drill chuck.

7.  Adjust the spindle speed to suit the drill size or cutter diameter.

8.  Keep area clean and free from grease, oil and other flammable materials

9.  Faulty equipment should NOT be used, REPORT IT IMMEDIATELY

OPERATIONAL SAFETY CHECKS

1.  Never leave the drill whilst it is still running. Switch it off.

2.  The drill press MUST be at a dead stop before making any adjustments.

3.  Feed down at a sufficient rate to keep the drill cutting.

4.  Feed with care as the drill breaks through the underside of the work.

5.  Use a safe working posture (beware of hair catching in moving parts).

HOUSE KEEPING

1.  Switch off the drill press.

2.  Brush or wipe down the machine to remove any swarf, chips or dust.

3.  Leave the area as you would like to find it
