Treaty of Versailles Project

World War I was known as the “war to end all wars.” Now you and your classmates are going to create the treaty that will end one of the most destructive wars in human history.

Goal: How are you going to end “the war to end all wars?”

Objective: Acting as the League of Nations, you will determine how World War I is going end.

  • Who is punished or rewarded?
  • What will the consequences be?

Roles: Nations or the Office

Nations

  • Each nation will be given two students that will represent your nation’s interests.
  • You will be provided three minutes total to reach your objective
  • Proposal, Answering Questions, Closing argument will all be included

Offices

•Chairman – Keeps the order in the meeting, recognizes the nations to speech, and keeps the debate flowing

•Note-taker – writesdown the proposed provisions

•Clock Manager – Keeps track of each nations time

The Treaty Process

Proposals

  • Give the background of your role in World War I.
  • What would you like to see be implemented in the formal treaty?
  • Justify your proposals.

Form a Coalition

  • Form a coalition with other like-minded nations
  • Create a treaty with your coalition

Propose your Treaty

  • Present your treaty to the other nations
  • Answer questions presented by the other nations
  • Your time will only count while you are answering the questions, and not during the questioning itself

Closing Statements

  • Why should the nations vote your proposed treaty into action?

Voting

  • The treaty needs to be accepted by the 2/3 of the nations
  • Each nation will receive two votes
  • Nations can vote multiple times

Comparative Essay (1 page)

  • In a well developed essay explain the following:
  • The importance of your specific role in the treaty process
  • Compare and contrast the actual Treaty of Versailles with the one created in class
  • Why might outcomes have been similar or different?

What to hand in?

  • Typed Outline of your notes (1page minimum)
  • Typed MLA Bibliography (minimum 3 sources)
  • Typed Comparative Essay (1page minimum)

Due Dates:

  • Typed outline and bibliography are due Tuesday 5/12
  • Typed comparative essay is due Monday 5/18
