One question concerning the definition of “latitudinal gradient” using Figures 15.6 and 15.7; One question concerning the information on mass extinctions figures 15.8, 15.9 and Table 15.1 (look at these as a group!); The concept of HIPPO, p 466-67; Figure 15.10 (look at the first 5 items in detail and in general, various ways in which invasive species disrupt native populations, i.e. “crowds out other plants”, or “releases toxins”, etc. ); Know items on the list of ecosystem services on page 471; Know what benefits are provided by biodiversity (section headings on pp. 470-476); Figure 15.14 (we stressed this one in class); Figure 15.15; Read page 484 and the bulleted points carefully; Figure 15.19 (what do you notice about the distribution of hotspots around the world?); there may be 1 to 2 additional questions.

Chapter 20 Figure 20.2; Table 20.2; Fig. 20.4. This is the single most important chapter in the text. I suggest reading it twice! There will be 5 to 6 questions from this chapter.

FILM: Cadillac Desert: There will be about 4 questions. In your notes, please review – paradigms that have changed over the years. What did the words “water conservation” mean 50 years ago, and what do they mean today. What is the American ideal concerning the “160 acre farm”? What is “pork barrel politics” and how has it operated with respect to water development? Think about environmental, social, and economic drawbacks to huge water development projects. Who wins and who loses? (There are no names or dates, but you should recognize some places such as Kesterson Marsh and Tulare Lake)
