Dear Principals:

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Observance Day Committee would like to invite all students to participate in the 35th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Observance Day Celebration. Students in grades 4 – 12 are asked to submit a theme for the annual celebration of Dr. King’s birth; students in grades 1-5 are invited to enter the poster or essay contest and grades 6-12, the essay contest. Will you please help us make all students aware of these opportunities through announcements and flyers at the schools as well as via the district website and Facebook page.

The guidelines for the theme contest are as follows: The theme should not exceed ten (10) words and should focus on the life and philosophy of Dr. King. The deadline is Friday, November 10, 2017.

Attached is the entry form for the submission of the themes but they may be written on regular notebook paper and must include the following:

Theme: Child’s Name: Teacher’s Name: School’s Name and Grade: Parent(s) or Guardian(s) Name: Address Telephone Number: Email Address

Four winners will be selected from each category. The theme and the winners will be announced on Wednesday, November 15, 2017 along with the guidelines and procedures for the poster and essay contests. The deadline for the poster and essay contests is Friday, December 15, 2017. Awards will be presented to all contest winners at the annual Dr. MLK, Jr. Celebration during the noon (12:00PM) youth program at the Effingham County Gymnasium on Highway 119 on Monday, January 15, 2018.

Winners are encouraged to participate in the parade and attend the noon day service.
