  1. Low-to-Medium Contributor: Place staff names in this box that are your low to medium contributors. Typically no retention interview is required for these employees because their likelihood of departure is low and there would not be as great an impact to the business if they were to leave.
  1. High-Value Contributor: Place staff names in this box that provide stability and continuity to the department. They are usually some of the highest performers and your most knowledgeable employees. May require a retention interview and job satisfaction and growth plan to maintain contribution level because while their likelihood of departure is low, the impact to the business is greater if they were to leave.
  1. Emerging Talent: Place staff names in this box that exhibit the performance and ability to advance to higher levels of responsibilitywith additional experience, training, and development. May require a retention interview and job satisfaction and growth plan to stay competitive with outside competition because of their high likelihood of departure. This box may also include staff with 1-5 years service or planned departure dates (e.g., retirements).
  1. Top Talent:Place staff names in this box that demonstrate the ability to advance to higher and more senior levels of responsibility within the University. They areusually the most difficult employees to replace given their high level of performance, senior leadership ability, competency skills, experience and other unique talents that make them attractive to outside opportunities. They represent the highest retention risk. Will require a retention interview and job satisfaction and growth plan to encourage them to stay and to minimize the significant impact to the business if they were to leave.

Participants in the retention interview pilot program are selected at manager/supervisor discretion.
