Reteach: Context Clues

You may use your parents or friends to complete the bottom portion. / In a dictionary or thesaurus find three words of which you have little knowledge or no knowledge. Use both the dictionary and thesaurus to help with your analysis (how you break down to understand) of each word. Create your own sentences using the words and context clues that would help a reader understand their meaning. You may use “Types of Context Clues” to help. / Using your incorrect responses on the quiz describe (tell about) why the correct answer is the BEST answer. Use the format of the example below AND UNRA(A)VEL/LPR3 vocabulary for each incorrect response:

Find three unfamiliar words in a book/magazine article/newspaper article, etc...(your choice). Copy the sentence(s) that contain the words. Use LPR3 and UNRA(A)VEL to find the words’ meanings. If you can’t Resolve the meaning Redo by examining sentences that surround the words. / Explain in no less than three sentences how LPR3 and UNRA(A)VEL can help readers understand words they don’t know. / Complete CLASSWORKS lesson and quiz. Create a one paragraph response evaluating (judge) whether the quiz and lesson helped you. If you choose CLASSWORKS, let me know ASAP so I can set you up in the program.

Context Clues: LPR3 Method

Look -before, at, and after the new word
Predict -quickly predict the word's meaning, remembering that a wrong prediction is often a good start
Reason -think more carefully about the word's meaning, trying to be as precise as the context clues permit
Resolve -recognize that you may need to take other steps (e.g., look it up, ask someone)
Redo -go through the steps again if necessary

  • Underline title
  • Now predict the passage
  • Run through and number paragraphs
  • Are you reading the questions?
  • Are the important words circled? (Write down their meaning)
  • Venture (read) through the passage
  • Eliminate the obviously wrong answers
  • Let the questions be answered and write the paragraph # where you found the answers next to the question
