Show Report.

Although competitors had to contend with a mixture of heavy showers and sunshine in Coilog Equestrian on Sunday , this did not dampen the enthusiasm of the 44 teams that competed in both the Novice and Open Interschools competition. It was great to see so many new schools to the competition including St Mary’s Naas, Scoil Mhuire Clane and Scoil Chonglais, Baltinglass.

The Novice team competition was ridden over a very technical track built by Chris Byrne of Coilog and proved difficult for all teams and was won in great style by St Mary’s Naas with riders Ciara Tyrell, (Indianna), Jamie Lee Nolan (Ballymanus Misty), Shelly O’Rourke (Clara Loft) and Ellen Hennessy (Honeysuckle), with Ardscoil na Trionoide, Athy just beating Wesley into third place on time penalties. The Novice Individual competition which had 43 competitors had only 5 clear rounds and was won by Eilis Ni Cheallaig (D J Charlie) of Scoil Mhuire Trim with Luke Heffernan (Ballymurray Max) of the host school Newbridge in 2nd place and third place won by Megan Duff on her pony Foxy Roxy.

The Open Team Event was very exciting as there were 17 teams in the jump off. With a lot of cheering and encouragement from the sidelines, Good Council New Ross, with riders, Aidan Byrne (Baileys Piper), Eoin Byrne (Kitetown Cherry) Jack Dalton (Smokey) and Jim Redmond (Little Romeo) were just fast enough to see off host team Newbridge College’s riders, Meadhbh Brassil, (St James’s Gate), Aoifa Murphy (Bottchelli), Megan Flanagan (Dunbrody Beauty) and Hannah Sutton (Castleturvin Smokey Pickle). With only 2 clear rounds in the jump off, the 3rd place was awarded to St Gerard’s the fastest of the four faulters.

The Open Individual Event proved very dramatic when the leading rider since 10 o’clock that morning, Lauren Heffernan on My Rockstown Two for Newbridge College with a time of 26 seconds was knocked into 3rd place by Ellen Rodford Dodd on Real Cool Cruise riding for Holy Child Killiney on a remarkable time of 23.84 seconds and then Mark Finnerty on Too Posh for St Gerard’s on 24.12 seconds the last two riders of the day.

NewbridgeCollege would like to acknowledge the great support and energy that Helen O’Neill – the Chef d’Equip has given to both the school and the numerous teams she has guided over the years, she will be sadly missed as Chef D’Equip but assures us she will always be there for advise and at the end of the phone. The great team spirit and healthy rivalry between all the schools continues next Sunday in Warrington Equestrian Centre when KilkennyCollege hosts the next leg of the interschools competition.
