  1. Job Purpose

This job description sets out the main purpose and elements of the post at this time. It is not an exhaustive list of duties and the successful post holder will work with the Chair and the Board to add to and refine the specific duties over time. The post will require the post holder to work in a flexible and creative way.

The Director will support the development and implementation of strategy, investment, branding, funding and programme management.

Ultimately, the Director will provide visible and strong leadership for the STA in building organisational capability and ensuring the delivery of strategic and operational plans. Its aim is to maximise benefits to the future success of the Scottish Tartans industry and its international development.

  1. Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Strategic

  • Develop the STA membership base and ensure that the membership offering is both compelling and competitive
  • Provide corporate leadership and strategic direction in order to deliver new projects and projects in development e.g. National Tartan Centre / Tartan Authenticity “Marque”
  • Ensure the right culture for partnership working and build outcome focussed relationships with funding and industry partners
  • Lead the STA planning process, working with the Board and partners to ensure effective development of corporate plans
  • Build relationships internally and externally to maximise the impact of the STA and to deliver the stated objectives of the organisation

Operational

  • Ensure the financial and operational procedures of the STA are fit for purpose and that they are subject to a programme of regular audit
  • Ensure that all the STA resources are managed effectively and that physical assets are both safe and secure
  • Be accountable for major and/or strategic programmes and projects, ensuring effective governance, management and reporting
  • Identify, undertake feasibility studies and initiate projects within the field which directly support and add value to the strategic direction of the organisation
  • Programme manage all projects and bring together multi-disciplinary stakeholders with complementary skills
  • Engage, cultivate and manage relationships with key stakeholders, both locally and nationally, including industry, members, OSCR, the public, local communities and funding organisations
  • Support the functions of fundraising, communication, PR, and branding
  • Identify new sources of funding such as venture philanthropy and other funding streams e.g. government and industry
  • Identify revenue opportunities which enable the STA to become more self-sustaining in the longer term
  • Develop Risk Register

Governance

  • Board Governance – preparation and related administration for Board meetings
  • Work collaboratively with trustees, board members, staff, volunteers and all external stakeholders to ensure all activities are strategically aligned and uphold the values and aspirations of the STA. Ensure that the Board are provided with high quality, timeous and accurate information to enable the Board to make strategic decisions.

PERSON SPECIFICATION: Director

EXPERIENCE
Significant senior experience in managing budgets
Proven ability in effective management
Experience of leading on strategic and business planning
Preparation and delivery of successful business plans
Proven track record of staff management and motivation of a team
Demonstrable experience of developing effective policies and procedures
Broader management experience in areas of personnel, and staff management
Experience of supporting and servicing a Board or Committee
Experience of working with funders
Broad knowledge of, and an interest in Tartan
KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of current developments and issues affecting the charitable and not for profit sector
Knowledge of the arts, culture and or voluntary sectors
ABILITIES
Excellent IT skills and ability to communicate across a dispersed organisation
Ability to effectively lead and motivate a team
Excellent administrative and organisational skills with the ability to develop comprehensive systems and procedures for business planning
