Summary
Dogs Trust has a long and proud history of supporting and rehoming dogs in need. We aim to ensure a future where dogs can enjoy a happy life free from the threat of unnecessary destruction and we are committed to rehoming as many dogs as possible in the most responsible way.
The Manager of our Newbury Centre will be responsible for ensuring the effective and efficient daily management of the Rehoming Centre, in line with Dogs Trust's codes of practice and Health and Safety guidelines, in order to find suitable homes for the maximum number of dogs.
Duties and responsibilities
  • Responsible for the welfare of all dogs housed at the Centre and for seeing that veterinary procedures are arranged as necessary. This includes behavioural reviews particularly of dogs in STAR and Sanctuary.
  • Responsible, with the aid of the Organisational Development department,for the recruitment, training, welfare and discipline of staff members so that they perform and develop to the greatest benefit of both Dogs Trust and the individuals themselves.
  • Devising SMART objectives for all staff each year within the context of Dogs Trust’s strategy. Manage their performance against those objectives.
  • Responsible for the maintenance and security of all Dogs Trust buildings and property, as well as cash and drugs, at the Centre.
  • Ensure that all Health and Safety procedures, as deemed necessary after assessment of risk, are implemented and followed.
  • Ensure that staff rosters, holidays, time off and sickness cover are managed effectivelyso that the Centre is appropriately staffed at all times.
  • Maximise the use of kennel space in order to do the greatest good for the largest number of dogs. Ensure maximum use of the STAR and Sanctuary facilities including by dogs from other rehoming centres.
  • Ensure that all Dogs Trust operational and adoption procedures, as specified in the Standard Operating Procedures or by custom, are implemented effectively and in a timely manner.
  • Ensure that all Dogs Trust administrative procedures, as specified in the Administrative Guidelines and Instructions or by custom, are implemented effectively and in a timely manner.
  • Ensure that records are kept, containing the known details of each dog, its date of entry into Dogs Trust care, its date of rehoming, its medical records, vaccination record etc.
  • Ensure that all staff understand the importance of excellent customer serviceand that they deliver customer service of the highest standardat all times
  • With the Assistant OperationsDirector, agree a proposed annual budget. Monitor expenditure regularly and ensure that it is within the agreed budget at all times.
  • Ensure that all monies received at the Centre are accounted for accurately and in accordance with Dogs Trust procedures and that they are banked promptly.
  • Ensure that volunteers with the appropriate skills and aptitudes are recruited and retained where possible to assist in various roles around the Centre.
  • Actively promote the work of Dogs Trust through the media, local interest groups etc. working with the Communications Team to ensure congruence with national Dogs Trust priorities.
  • Hold regular staff meetings (at least once per month) in order to disseminate information and acquire feedback and ideas from staff members.
  • Carry out annual Staff Appraisals, giving constructive feedback and ensuring that the highest standards of performance are achieved.
  • Provide information and reports to Dogs Trust London as required.
  • Carry out night duties as required.
  • Work over the weekend as agreed with the Assistant Operations Director – this is likely to be at least two weekends per month.
  • The normal hours in this role are 40 per week. However, there will be times when longer hours are required in order to fulfill the responsibilities of the role.
  • Carry out any other duties as directed by the Assistant Operations Director, Operations Director or Chief Executive.

Knowledge /
