School Caretaker Job Description

Responsibilities (either directly, jointly or through devolved structures)

  • To uphold the ethos and values of the school at all times
  • Check the School Calendar for each day on arrival for notice of events
  • Check the caretaker folder in the School Office on arrival
  • Report to Site Manager for details of any requirements - Setting up for events to be given priority
  • To ensure that any matters relating to Health and Safety are addressed as a priority
  • To set up the appropriate areas and facilities for school events as required
  • Clear School Office and Entrance Hall of deliveries
  • Tidy round and replace toilet rolls, hand towels and hand wash
  • Sweep and mop floor of the dining areas as necessary
  • Clear kitchen rubbish into bin store
  • Clear site of litter, clean floors and entrance areas as necessary
  • Deliver any lost property to the appropriate areas
  • Empty rubbish bins and clean windows as necessary
  • Wash and dry kitchen towels as required
  • General furniture check and repair or request replacements
  • General locker check and repair
  • General building maintenance as required
  • Landscaping and sport field line marking as required
  • Check Bin Store and make sure it is presentable
  • Supervise movement in car park for school events as required
  • Liaise with the housekeeper and cleaners as necessary
  • Help with site security and lock up. Turn off heaters and computers. Ensure windows are closed and fire exits clear

  • It is expected that the Caretaker will be ‘On Call’ by radio at all times whilst on duty
  • Assist with evening and weekend events as required (time in lieu to be given as needed)
The job holder’s responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young person’s for whom s/he is responsible, or with whom s/he comes into contact will be to adhere to and ensure compliance with the relevant Cognita Safeguarding - Child Protection Policy and Procedures at all times. If in the course of carrying out the duties of the role, the job holder identifies any instance that a child is suffering or likely to suffer significant harm either at school or at home, s/he must report any concerns to the School’s Child Protection Officer/Designated Safeguarding Lead or to the Head or indeed to the Regional CEO so that a referral can be made accordingly to Children’s Social care and/or the Local Authority Designated officer.
