  1. Clown Hunting (Carbide Cannon) Demo [25] < IF WEATHER BAD, DO PERFECTLY POISONOUS
  2. Purpose
  3. Inquiry based course! Observations > questions > experiments > “answers”
  4. Course will cover (nearly) all of physical science. Each unit will explore & explain some feature of the cannon and you will understand the cannon completely when we’re done
  5. EXERCISE & EXIT TICKET (notebook):

1)Observe the carbide cannon demo(s)

2)Write down at least 2 questions that could be answered by a scientific investigation

  2. Cannon (calcium carbide & water, projectile)
  3. Reaction: produces highly flammable acetylene gas: demo carbide candle
  4. Prep
  5. Safety – HUGE part of course! What precautions should we take? [2]

  3. Clown placement: have each S stand where they think the projectile will hit — place clown at median of group
  4. Assignments

1)Assign 2 spotters to mark landing spot

2)Assign 2 Ss to measure flight distance w/ tape measure

3)Assign 2 Ss to time flight (from hearing bang to seeing impact)

1)Pre-position spotters & flight timers to see impact

2)Check all for ready

3)Dr V adds carbide (0.5 gram = 1 white scoop), screws on breech, adds water(2 pipettes) / covers fire hole

4)Start countdown timer (30 sec)

5)At 25 sec, count down 5 sec and say “FIRE”

6)Time flight, locate & measure point of impact

  1. Recover all material and take inside, get seated, return goggles [5]
  2. Questions
