Climate of Diversity and Inclusion Around the World
As global educators, we are constantly looking for ways to better support the students we send abroad. One way to do that is to stay abreast of the climate of diversity in other countries. While the news often only provides a small view of national politics, policies, culture, and on goings in a given country, it is helpful to get a general sense of what's going on in the world. Below you will find a handful of articles that highlight the climate of diversity and inclusion around the world.

Strategies for student success suggested by the Hamilton College Study

Women

  • Adjust/conform to foreign gender expectations
  • Learn to exist in uncomfortable circumstances

Alter behavior to avoid dangerous or uncomfortable situations, e.g. drink less to remain more alert, look out for friends, intervene when necessary

LGBTQ Students

  • Watch for cues about how accepting host families are of the LGBTQ community
  • If they are not very accepting, may need to stay in the closet
  • Live or communicate with friends that are positive and accepting
  • Volunteer at an LGBTQ center (youth, health, etc.) to find a local LGBT community
  • Adapt behavior and self-presentation (especially clothing) when traveling

Urban areas tend to be more open/accepting and may factor into program choice

Race and Ethnicity

  • Expect to have a heightened awareness of race and feeling like an outsider
  • Be prepared for a range of reactions—many positive, some negative (stares, disregard for personal space, name-calling)

Expect pre-conceived notions about American identity and more attention to be paid to national identity than race

Overall Strategies for Institutions

  • Organize peer networks

Establish connections between various offices on campus for student support and programming during pre-departure and reentry phases
