Resources for Academic Assessment and Counseling Services

The University of Oklahoma, School of Community Medicine in Tulsa currently offers three avenues for resident physicians seeking academic assessment and counseling services. The programs are described below:

·  The Student/Employee Assistance Program (EAP) – The EAP provides voluntary and confidential counseling, consultation, evaluation, and information to students and family members who request help with problems. OU-Tulsa provides up to six (6) appointments at no cost to the resident or resident’s family members. Services are provided by Family & Children’s Services at one of their office locations, not at your workplace, by professional licensed, experienced counseling staff who hold Master’s or Ph.D. degrees in social work or psychology. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 587-9471.

·  Health Insurance Coverage: All health insurance policies currently offered to residents on the OU-Tulsa campus provide mental health services for inpatient hospital and treatment facilities at a cost to the resident ranging from 20-35% of the cost, depending on the plan chosen and whether the services are obtained within or out-of network. Additionally, outpatient mental health services are covered for 20-26 visits per year, depending on the plan chosen, with a co pay of $35 per visit.

·  OU-Tulsa Office of Student Affairs – This office currently offers students seeking academic assessment a referral to Dr. Barbara McKinney, a private educational consultant. Recently the office has hired Ann Murphy, a licensed professional counselor and licensed alcohol and drug counselor, to serve students, both OU and OUHSC. Student Fees pay for this service. It would be ideal to have Ann serve as a screening site before residents are referred for expensive testing.

Since residents do not pay student fees, it will be necessary to develop a contract between the Office of Student Affairs and the Residency counterpart in Oklahoma City campus regarding their contract for similar services on that campus.

Additional Issues for Discussion:

·  Management referrals to EAP

·  Payment for services

·  Services currently not available: academic remediation, language lessons
