Residence Opportunity
THE OPPORTUNITY
St. Paul’s Hospital, Saskatoon, is providing an opportunity for up to four persons to complete Clinical Pastoral Education residencies within its facility and the affiliated health region. Residencies begin September 8, 2014 and conclude August 31, 2015. Residents will work as integral members of the Spiritual Care Department, complete three units of Clinical Pastoral Education, begin to collect clinical hours and commence the preparation of written materials for certification by the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care.
THE RESIDENCY DETAILS
Residents will concurrently complete three units of Clinical Pastoral Education while working as a regular member of the Spiritual Care Department. Students will provide a minimum of 20 and a maximum of 37.5 hours per week of spiritual care provision during the residency period. Residents will receive a monthly stipend of $1500/month for the twelve month period. Students will also pay 50% of the published tuition fee for each unit of CPE. Advanced students can apply to CASC Saskatchewan for a bursary in the amount $250 per unit. Students will be granted two weeks leave and a monthly Scheduled Day Off during the residency period as negotiated with the Supervisor. Applicants must have successfully completed at least one unit of basic CPE and have completed one year towards a graduate degree in theology or other related field (see CASC Manual) in order to qualify for admission to the residency. SIPE is a cluster of teaching centers committed to providing quality supervised pastoral education opportunities. The three accredited sites in the cluster are LutherCare Communities, Swan Valley (MB) Community Program and St. Paul’s Hospital. The Residency Program will be provided through St. Paul’s Hospital in conjunction with the Saskatoon Health Region.
ST. PAUL’S HOSPITAL & SASKATOON HEALTH REGION
St. Paul's Hospital, a member of the Catholic Health Ministry of Saskatchewan, is an acute care teaching facility offering a comprehensive range of services. St. Paul's Hospital shares a unique relationship with the Saskatoon Health Region described in a partnership agreement through which the St. Paul's Hospital Board is responsible for the governance and management of select care groups such as Chronic Disease Management, Palliative Care, Renal Services, Spiritual Care Services and Mental Health. The Saskatoon Health Region is the largest in the province, serving approximately 318,000 local residents in more than 100 communities through 10 hospitals, 29 long term care facilities, and numerous primary health care sites. In addition SHR provides training opportunities to more than 2000 health science students.
SASKATOON THEOLOGICAL UNION
SIPE is associated with The Saskatoon Theological Union, an association of three theological education colleges: the College of Emmanuel and St. Chad (Anglican Church of Canada), Lutheran Theological Seminary Saskatoon (Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada), and St. Andrew's College (United Church of Canada). All three colleges are affiliated with the University of Saskatchewan. The STU was originally formed in 1969 as the Graduate School of Theology to facilitate a cooperative and ecumenical approach to theological education on the prairies. While remaining distinct and separate institutions, the three member colleges share numerous resources, including their libraries and faculty. CPE units can be used for course credits within the STU.

Saskatoon is Saskatchewan’s largest city with an estimatedpopulation of 248,700 and growing. It is centrally located in the province of Saskatchewan and 780 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg, a little over 520 kilometres southeast of Edmonton, and just over 300 kilometres north of the U.S. border. Saskatoon is situated on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River which is crossed by seven bridges. It is one of the sunniest cities in Canada, receiving an average of 2,381 hours annually. Saskatoon experiences four distinct seasons with temperatures ranging from 30°c (86f) on the warmest summer days to -30°c (-22f) on the coldest winter days. The average annual precipitation level is 347.2mm.
