THE ASSIGNMENT

Your assignment is to examine one aspect of tribal culture presented in Things Fall Apart, its significance to the Ibo community, and to compare and contrast how that cultural aspect changed from precolonial to postcolonial Nigeria. You will create a presentation that reflects your research.

PLANNING:

Consider the following:

  • What research questions will help you compare and contrast your specific aspect of pre- and postcolonial Ibo culture?
  • How does this relate to Things Fall Apart?
  • How will you record your research so you can present it to the class?
  • Use the note taking forms here to get the raw information from your sources down onto paper; consider how you will present this information to the class in a polished manner (such as notecards, “presenter mode” in PowerPoint, or memorization).

CREATING AND REHEARSING:

Consider the following:

  • How will you select the most interesting and relevant facts and details to include in your presentation?
  • How will you organize your presentation to compare and contrast Ibo culture before and after the colonial period?
  • How will you use your chosen presentation tool (PowerPoint, Prezi, Google Slides, etc.) to incorporate audio or visual components into your presentation?
  • How will you choose relevant images and caption them appropriately to engage your audience?
  • How will you divide the speaking responsibilities and transition between speakers?
  • How will you handle answering questions from the audience at the end of your presentation?

PRESENTING AND LISTENING:

Consider the following:

  • What are the effective speaking and listening techniques you will need to use to engage your audience?
  • How will you organize your notes on your peers’ presentations so you can keep track of all the information you receive?

TO SEE YOUR RUBRIC AND SCORING GUIDE FOR THIS PROJECT, REFERENCE YOUR SPRINGBOARD BOOK ON PAGE 242.

Carefully read over the rubric in Springboard on page 242 and examine the qualities of an Exemplary project. Create a plan with your group members to meet the Exemplary criteria.
